Sports industry in the Middle East continues to grow

United Arab Emirates: Monday, December 07 - 2009 @ 10:02

With a challenging year coming to an end, there is a general feeling of optimism and excitement for things to come in the year ahead, with new products, activities and growth areas to be targeted.

Raymond Kelly, Managing Director Raymond Sport LLC commented

“2009 has been a difficult year during which time we have all worked harder and smarter to maintain our position and targets. The total dedication of our team has paid off and we anticipate ending the year in a much better position than we could have foreseen in January. 2008 was a record year, and Raymond Sport has witnessed 22 years of year-on-year growth – 2009 will not disappoint. We are focussing on the promotion of Mixed Martial Arts at Sportex Middle East 2009; Mixed Martial Arts training is certainly a growing trend in the fitness industry with many popular one-on-one or group training options offered in the region. Sportex for us is a great opportunity to meet with regional and international trendsetters and suppliers, and already on Day 1 we have established some excellent new contacts.”

Open to fitness professionals, trade members and the general public, the show offers an exciting three days of business, education and fun. Special events taking place include a Body Building Championship organised in association with the Emirates Bodybuilding Federation (EBBF) on 7th December, with athletes from across the region competing to win the coveted Sportex Cup.

Sports equipment distributors are not the only exhibitors attending: Dubai Sports Council, Dubai Sports City and a number of UAE and regional-based associations also have a presence.

New in 2009 is the Mohammed Bin Rashid Al Maktoum Creative Sports Award – the first recipients of which will be presented with their awards at a gala event in Dubai January 2010. This award is currently targeting sportsmen and women, teams and corporations regionally, but is anticipated to become an international award from 2011. Based on the thought and philosophy of the top sportsman H.H. Sheikh Mohammed Bin Rashid Al Maktoum, Vice President & Prime Minister of UAE and Ruler of Dubai, the award’s vision is to make Dubai a world centre for sports creativity, supremacy and excellence.

Launching sports equipment for kids in the region through Sportex 2009 is Sportal Switch Middle East – with a wide range of fitness and games equipment, this visionary company is tackling childhood obesity and diabetes head on with their range of Panatta kid’s gym equipment – of interest to hotels, community developers, schools and fitness professionals across the region.

The Middle East is billed as one of the world’s fastest growing regions for the travel and tourism industry, and according to a ‘researchandmarkets.com’ report on market trends in April 2009 ‘By 2010 the global sports equipment market is forecast to have a value of $76.8bn, up 10.9% from 2008’.

Sportex Middle East offers an exclusive event focused on this burgeoning market segment for the region, providing a perfect platform for the launch of new products to a targeted audience.

Exhibitors at Sportex 2009 also include camping and outdoor equipment, fitness equipment and accessories, indoor sports equipment, track and field sports equipment, shoes and apparels, nutrition, and sport stadium facilities.

Sportex 2009 is supported by the World Federation of the Sporting Goods Industry (WFSGI), a world authoritative body for the sports industry and officially recognized by the IOC, the Government of Dubai Department of Economic Development and the Government of Dubai Department of Tourism and Commerce Marketing (DTCM)

Sportex 2009 will run until December 8 at the Dubai World Trade Centre.
