United Arab Emirates: Monday, October 11 - 2010 @ 13:49

The second PAN IIM Alumni Gulf Summit will bring together IIM Alumni who are corporate leaders and entrepreneurs from a cross-section of industries and social sectors in India and the Middle East, to share their successful experiences and lessons. The summit will be held under the theme The New Global Economic Paradigm – Spotlight on India and will seek to address the opportunities and critical challenges facing business leaders and managers in the rapidly evolving ‘new’ economic environment.

A special address at the Summit will be given by H.E. Mr. Sanjay Verma, Consul General of India, Dubai. The panels will open with a welcome speech by Madhu Payan Sharma, IIMA’70, President, Techmart, Dubai and Director on the Board of the Pan IIM Alumni Network Board.

The keynote address will be delivered by V. Shankar, IIMB’79, CEO Europe, ME, Africa and Americas, Standard Chartered Bank. Commenting on the forthcoming summit, Mr Shankar, IIMB ’79, and spokesperson for the Pan-IIM Alumni Network in the UAE, said: “The global economy has now reached an inflection point where the balance of economic power is shifting perceptibly and tangibly from the West to the East. This is the culmination of economic forces that have been at play over the past few decades. Rapidly growing economies like China and India have become the engines of global economic growth. The second PAN IIM Alumni Gulf Summit aims to discuss the re-balancing of global financial and economic power, and forging of new geographic linkages through trade and investment flows.”

India is the world’s fifth largest economy in terms of GDP PPP; the world’s largest democracy and now, as the greenshoots of global recovery are being spotted, the Indian economy is preparing to launch itself to a higher growth trajectory, while eyeing a greater role or itself in the arena of international policies. However, there are current systematic difficulties that have to be overcome to ensure that the growth is sustainable – socially, economically and environmentally.

There are over 250 alumni from the IIMs based in the UAE, several holding prominent positions in various sectors. “A forum for social and professional interaction among the IIM alumni, the Pan-IIM Alumni Network in the Gulf is committed to further enhancing the region’s development in all spheres by utilising its rich pool of talent, intellect and experience. It is with this objective that the network and summit have been initiated to help identify strategic solutions to the turbulent economic times,” says Avi Bhojani, IIMB’80, Group CEO, BPG Group, and spokesperson for the Pan IIM Alumni Network in the UAE.

“Here’s where the 2nd Pan-IIM Alumni Gulf Summit plays a large role. Leaders from different sectors of business are going to meet on this platform to highlight the innovative strategies being adopted by their organisations to address the existing and emerging challenges and opportunities,” says Rasleen Sahni, IIMC’02, Corporate Credit Analyst, First Gulf Bank, and principle organiser of the Network and the Summit.

At the summit, the first panel will focus on “The Indian Corporate Sector”, which will look at the opportunities and challenges of doing business in India.
