Considered as the foremost regional event in the internal audit industry, the two-day conference, under the theme “Shaping the Future”, was held at the Ritz Carlton Hotel Abu Dhabi. Prominent industry speakers, including Mr. Larry Harrington, Vice Chairman, IIA Global; Dr. Mansoor Al Awar, Chancellor of Hamdan bin Mohamed eUniversity, and Dr. Tommy Weir Managing Director – Emerging Markets Leadership Center, applauded the efforts of the UAE IAA in organizing an event of such magnitude for the 14th year running and emphasized the need to unify the global efforts through knowledge sharing and best practice.
“Our efforts and numerous initiatives to promote the internal audit practice, not only in the UAE but across the region have paid off today, as we bear witness to a remarkable increase in attendance to our 14thAnnual Regional Audit Conference, both on the individual and corporate levels,” said Mr. Abdulqader Obaid Ali, President of the Board of The UAE IAA.
“From corporate governance to transparency and best internal audit practices, the two-day conference will discuss in open sessions and customized workshops the best practices to advance the prominence of the internal audit profession to higher visibility and acceptance locally and throughout the entire region,” he added.
This year’s organization of the regional conference witnessed a major shift and additional benefit for conference participants represented by the onsite availability of the entire IIA Global Bookstore to allow attendees to browse and purchase books on the spot without incurring additional shipping charges.
“The IIA Global Bookstore is managed by the IIA Research Foundation (IIARF) and for the first time in history, the IIARF is bringing the bookstore to MENA Region event,” Commented Mr. Kevin Rafiq, Chief Executive Officer of the UAE Internal Audit Association. “This speaks volume about the growth and maturity of our event as well as the strength of our partnership with IIA Global. Through this partnership, our conference participants will be able to browse one of the largest Internal Audit selections of books and publication in a single location. They will also be able to purchase desired publication discount negotiated in advance with IIARF.”
In addition to delegates from partner institutes in neighboring countries in Saudi Arabia, Qatar, Oman, Jordan, Lebanon, the internal audit practice also welcomed tothe UAE IAA’s regional conference practitioners from Yemen, Bahrain, Kuwait and Sudan. This was part of ongoing efforts by UAEIAA to support them with the establishment of their respective local Internal Audit institutes. These efforts are in line with the UAE IAA’s continued drive to build synergy and align regional efforts under an umbrella of top industry practitioners.
Also for the first time, the UAE IAA team was keen on involving university students as volunteers at this year’s conference. This was part of the plan to continue to generate more awareness for the internal audit profession among the younger generation. It was also an opportunity for the students to participate in a professional event and learn from expert speakers in order to enrich their educational experience and add value to their future development.
This year’s Annual Regional Audit Conference was sponsored and enriched by Deloitte, Ernest & Young, PWC, Protiviti, Etihad Airways, Mubadala and NBAD.
