International Academy Amman organizes its 1st Model United Nations Conference

Jordan: Sunday, November 27 - 2011 @ 12:45

The 3-day Conference concluded on 26th November, 2011, and is headed and organized by IAA students. The list of prominent speakers at the I’MUN includes Jordan’s Foreign Minister Nasser Judeh, the Canadian Ambassador to Jordan and UNICEF representatives.

Participating in the Conference alongside IAA students are 200 students from Amman Baccalaureate School, Ahliyyah School for Girls, National Orthodox School, New English School, Al-Asriyah Schools and Modern American School.

During the I’MUN, students are divided into a number of committees, mirroring real-life UN conferences, to give them better insight on real UN deliberations. The Committees include Human Rights, Eco-society and the Security Council, in addition to a General Assembly “A” and a General Assembly “B”.

“The Conference, which is a replica of real-life UN conferences, creates an environment that encourages students’ involvement in positive and constructive discussions on current regional and global events taking place around the world today. IAA seeks to have participating students at the I’MUN come up with plausible solutions to current conflicts occurring in the world around us. This will enhance their knowledge and awareness, and bring forth independent and outspoken individuals who are capable of expressing their opinion in a confident manner,” commented Dr. Hana’ Kanan, Managing Director of IAA.

Dr. Kanan added, “We have chosen Enhancing Women’s Rights as the Conference’s theme due to our firm belief in the invaluable role women play in advancing the community as a whole. The I’MUN focuses on the importance of involving women in all economic, social and political facets as they represent an incredibly significant 50% of the community. Achieving this equilibrium will better enable us to build an informed generation capable of achieving socioeconomic and political development.”

Founded in 2004, the International Academy Amman consists of Reception and grades 1-12, and adopts a modern and innovative international educational curriculum. The IAA aims to equip students with the skills, expertise and foundations needed to enhance their personal, social and academic capabilities. The Academy has proudly celebrated its first graduating class comprised of 32 students, many of whom have been accepted at some of the most prestigious universities in the world such as Harvard, Columbia, Cornell and the University of Pennsylvania, amongst others.
