Debating, problem solving, collaboration, lobbying were just some of the skills displayed at the Model United Nations (MUN) that recently took place at The Hague International Model United Nations in Qatar (THIMUN Qatar). For the second year, the school sent a strong team to Doha to take part.
The students were selected from a very enthusiastic MUN group at JBS, who meet every week under the watchful eyes of Robert Godel, the school Librarian, and History teacher Dan Housley Like all Model UN events, the THIMUN conference brings students together from around the world to learn and share ideas from a diverse set of experiences and backgrounds. The event enables students to develop their diplomatic and debating skills while role-‐playing the representative of a country’s delegation, and the JBS team took full advantage of the opportunities available.
Mr. Andrew Homden; Principal, said, “It’s wonderful to see such a strong school team at this latest MUN session in Qatar. I know how keen our delegates were to take part, and this year the school was represented both by more experienced participants as well as students taking part for the first time, who gained really valuable experience while soaking up the atmosphere.”
The JBS students who attended (Kimberlee Brinkman, Beth Shepard, Carlee Shepard, Laith Fraijat, Parsa Lalianpour, Fadhel Al Mazrouei, Moaza Al Mazrouei, Ali Ibrahem, Hessa Al Qassim, Noora AlQassim, Tareq Abbasi, Zeyad Abbasi and Christina Avello) were representing Rwanda and Afghanistan, while debating issues related to sustainable development. There were a wide variety of committees that students can participate in, including the Security Council, for which Kim Brinkman and Carlee Shepard had the honour of being selected.
