On 4 March 2014 in Dubai, the International Bar Association (IBA) Legal Practice Division (LPD) Initiative for Women Business Lawyers in the Middle East will host its inaugural programme aimed at lawyers in commercial law practice. The event is a direct response to research undertaken by the IBA in the UAE, Kuwait and Jordan in 2013, and is being held in collaboration with the International Chamber of Commerce United Arab Emirates (ICC-UAE). Similar events are planned for other Middle East jurisdictions later in the year.
IBA LPD Council Member Sylvia Khatcherian explains, ‘In 2011, at the IBA Annual Conference held in Dubai I had the opportunity to meet with local women commercial lawyers with aspirations to increase their knowledge base of international commercial law and to enhance their awareness of global standards and trends in commercial practice. In short, they wanted the know-how to become better global corporate lawyers.’ She added, ‘Since those early conversations, the IBA has visited Kuwait City and Amman, and re-visited Dubai to gain greater understanding of what would be valuable. This forthcoming event will address the challenges and opportunities for lawyers whether they are working in government, the private sector or private practice and represents long-term IBA commitment to the lawyers of the region.’
The two-day programme entitled ‘Working in government, private sector or private practice – challenges and opportunities for legal professionals’, is being convened with the support of the IBA’s Law Firm Management Committee, Anti-Corruption Committee and Arab Regional Forum. The Forum’s Chair and event Co-Chair Sadiq Jafar said, ‘We support this event whole-heartedly and are delighted that after much planning it has reached fruition. The IBA Arab Regional Forum recognises that it represents the first substantive IBA programme for women business lawyers in the Middle East region and we are certain that participants will benefit tremendously from the assembled expertise.’
Event Co-Chair Hoda Barakat commented, ‘This programme has received an enthusiastic welcome, partly due to the impressive line-up of both local and international speakers. The programme is designed to provide insight into specific topics of legal practice, including business development and law firm management, best practice regarding anti-corruption compliance, the development of practice areas or specialisation, and methods of knowledge management. In addition to the substantive educational element, the event also provides a valuable networking opportunity. It has been an exciting time preparing for this launch and I look forward to engaging with our delegates in the interactive workshops.’
The IBA LPD Initiative for Women Business Lawyers in the Middle East event is open to both male and female legal practitioners. It will take place from 4 – 5 March 2014 at Dusit Thani Dubai, 133 Sheikh Zayed Road, Dubai, UAE. Admittance and participation is free of charge. However, registration is essential as places are limited.
