Inspired by the Dubai Strategic Plan announced by HH Sheik Mohamed Bin Rashid Al Makhtoum, Prime Minister of UAE and the Ruler of Dubai, IMH joined the efforts in 2006 to allow evaluation of its services as part of the process to gain medical accreditation that puts it on par with other such institutions worldwide.
In October 2007, Dr. John Duffy, M.D., Administrator Team Leader & Dr. Stuart Shikora, M.D., Physician Surveyor from Joint Commission International Accreditation (JCIA) visited International Modern Hospital to asses its services & facilities preparing it for the international accreditation. Already a hospital that maintains the highest standards of health care, its application for accreditation from the leading Joint Commission International, is expected to proven successful.
Joint Commission International (JCI) is a division of Joint Commission Resources (JCR), the subsidiary of the Joint Commission. For more than 75 years, the Joint Commission and its predecessor organization have been dedicated to improving the quality and safety of health care services.
Today, the largest accreditor of health care organizations in the United States, the Joint Commission surveys nearly 20,000 health care programs through a voluntary accreditation process. The Joint Commission and its subsidiary are both non-profit organizations.
The JCI accreditation process is a comprehensive, reliable, and objective review, while allowing for cultural adaptations and needs across different countries. The standards address important quality and safety issues such as patient involvement in health care decisions, infection control, staff qualifications, and preventing errors in treatment.
Hospitals seeking JCI accreditation are evaluated through stringent procedures, approximately 300 standards that include onsite inspections and personnel examinations. Only hospitals showing a strong commitment to continuously improve quality and patient safety by using state-of-the-art international standards and patient safety goals are awarded this distinction.
At IMH, all medical and administrative staff underwent special extensive training sessions and educational workshops in preparation for JCI accreditation. Through special training sessions, the focus was on topics such as: Quality and JCIA, Documentation requirements, Occurrence Variance and Medication Error Reporting, Quality Improvement Model & Patient Safety Goals, to mention a few.
Managers of both the clinical and administration departments of the hospital were oriented with enormous courses revolving around quality management concepts, applying and continuously maintaining JCIA standards, hospital quality improvement and patient safety plan, team building, patient safety goals, and quality improvement tools.
“The hospital management embraced and emphasized on the quality culture during the planning and designing stages of the hospital. We had a farsighted vision that evoked us to develop and maintain the highest medical standards as a core concept. As a result we gave great importance to attracting international medical expertise that already enjoys high medical practice along with equipping the hospital with the latest technologies. In other words, International Modern Hospital has already been complying by the international standards,” says Dr. Riyadh AL Jord, the Managing Director.
IMH is proud to join the elite group of few hospitals worldwide who really embrace the culture of excellence especially when it comes to someone’s health, safety, and life.
