A sample station of bicycles, similar to the famous Parisian Velib, has been installed on the Corniche, the favorite promenade of Doha residents, next to the Sheraton hotel.
From February 5th 2011 to April 5th 2011, residents and tourists will have the opportunity to enjoy a ride from 3pm to 8pm, on a dedicated bicycle track on the Corniche, and will be encouraged to share their feedbacks with the organizers. The service is free of charge and users will be guided on the station by an operator. They will have to give their ID number to the operator in exchange of a bicycle and helmet, which will both have to be returned to the Q Bike station.
This test ride will allow the Highest Authorities and q.media Decaux to assess the service and consider a city-wide development of the scheme, which would participate in promoting eco-friendly transport modes, in easing the exponentially growing traffic in Doha, and in promoting regular physical exercise among the population. Moreover, the launch of Q Bike is a key milestone in reaching the country‟s objective to become the region‟s capital for cycling.
Eng. Mohammed Al Sayed, Director of Doha Municipality, said, “We are happy to offer Doha residents the first-ever self-service bicycle scheme in the Middle-East. The city is growing and it is our responsibility to ensure a sustainable development of Doha. We are excited to know the feedbacks of our residents following this test period to make Q Bike a real success and expand it rapidly to the whole city. The project also shows Qatar’s ambitions to stand as a nation promoting sports as it has just been awarded the organization of the FIFA World Cup 2022.”
Sheikh Al Hussain, Chairman of q.media Decaux, said, “We are delighted to provide the Municipality of Doha and its residents with an innovative and successful service, combining leisure, practicability and respect of the environment. One of our Group values is to excel being a city provider, participating in the improvement of the quality of life, and we believe this project will fully benefit the population of Doha.”
