The Kanoo Group supports Dubai School of Government’s focus on expanding women’s participation in different fields

United Arab Emirates: Monday, March 28 - 2011 @ 13:41

The lecture to be held today, 6:30 PM at Dubai School of Government’s Convention Tower, 13th Floor, will be delivered by Dr. Georgeta Vidican, Assistant Professor, Engineering Systems and Management Programme – Masdar Institute of Science and Technology and Noor Ghazal Aswad, Research Assistant, Masdar Institute of Science and Technology.

Mishal Kanoo, Deputy Chairman of The Kanoo Group, said: “Our company recognizes the vital importance of women’s economic empowerment as a way to reflect towards the future. Women’s natural inclination towards these fields is encouraged to participate especially for national development as reflected in effective policies and innovative initiatives being done by Dubai School of Government.”

Using a survey research examined by Dubai School of Government on a sample of undergraduate and graduate women students across the UAE, and semi-structured interviews with professionals in education, policy, and science, technology, and engineering (STE) fields, factors are found that influence women’s decisions regarding education and career choices and their attitudes towards STE.

Dubai School of Government puts forward culturally sensitive and informed recommendations for education policy-makers regarding methods to expand women’s participation in STE fields.

Findings point to the importance of increasing interest in STE by raising awareness of what the fields entail, potential careers, and their suitability with existing traditional and cultural believes.

Dubai School of Government also suggests that there is a need to undo negative stereotypes of engineering, implement initiatives for further family involvement at the higher education level, as well as to ensure a greater availability of STE university programs across all Emirates.

Recently held lecture also sponsored by The Kanoo Group, addressed the energy diversification strategy of the EU, and particularly of Eastern European states, in the context of reduced reliance on Russia, and examined the geopolitical and economic dimensions of the GCC countries and the EU.
