The ICAO (International Civil Aviation Organization) encourages the use of passports equipped with a smart chip. Used in tandem with traditional physical security measures (special inks, security paper, etc) the introduction of a smart chip in new passports increases the reliability of travel documents.
Each electronic passport, or e-passport, produced is linked to a digital signature (the equivalent of an electronic national seal) by the issuing country. This “certifies” the individual-specific data stored in the smart chip. This electronic national seal, which is produced using complex cryptographic systems, makes it impossible to modify the data stored in the chip without breaking the electronic national seal linked to it. Full verification of the security systems in the chip guarantees the authenticity and accuracy of the data contained in the passport.
In order to prevent the use of forged passports, each country can verify that the seal has not been broken, but the authenticity of the seal contained in the chip must also be checked.
The nPKD (national Public Key Directory) system developed by Keynectis meets this last requirement fully as it gives countries the option of having a certified copy of the global directory of “national electronic seals” available on-site. This directory is published by member countries of the ICAO and is known as the ICAO PKD. For each electronic passport scanned, the border control system can consult the on-site Keynectis nPKD in order to check that the passport’s “electronic seal” is on the list of seals published by the passports issuing country.
This new product completes a comprehensive range of security software which allows government agencies and businesses to manage identities and guarantee the security of their electronic transactions.
Meet with Keynectis at Gitex in Dubai from 17-21 October, 2010 – stand n°C4-46 – French Pavilion. Demonstrations of Keynectis’ electronic certificate (national identity card and e-Passport) management solutions for governments and businesses will be displayed, alongside systems which allow documents to be signed electronically.
