The initiative Startup Weekend that is a nonprofit activity, which is happening at Manarat Al Saadiyat Island, is planned for 54 hours, where participants share their innovative ideas, and it is designed to bring together business and community leaders with entrepreneurs and startup enthusiasts to inspire, educate and empower.
It’s worth mentioning that Dubai event received 650 registrations only two weeks after its official announcement. Sixty-two pitches were presented on the first day of the competition, for technology startup ideas and projects. After, thirty nine teams formed themselves to work on the best ideas. On the third day, after the final pitch of ideas, the judges selected four winning teams.
The Khalifa Fund for Enterprise Development, Chief Executive H. E. Abdullah Saeed Al Darmaki expressed how the fund is always supporting this kind of activities and programs aimed at promoting the spirit of innovation and creativity at the young generation, and urge them to adopt entrepreneurship as a lasting approach, indicating that Startup Weekend is considered to be one of the few events that have achieved remarkable success in exploring the skills of young people and mobilize their energies. He also stressed that Khalifa Fund will provide all necessary support for the success of any technical project complies with the requirements and conditions of the Khalifa Fund financing.
Startup Weekend Abu Dhabi is organized by Ms. Sara Falaknaz, Ms. Deem AlBassam and Mr. Kamal Hassan – who are the founders of Innovation Machine, a Dubai based organization that promotes local and regional entrepreneurship and innovative startups. “We are creating a movement of startups in the region, giving opportunities for people to start their own businesses” said Deem AlBassam, who is one of the partners. Sara Falaknaz, partner and Emarati entrepreneur commented, “We are trying to raise awareness and encourage young entrepreneurs to transform their ideas into a tangible startup, and we are so excited that this is happening now in Abu Dhabi” When asked about his feedback on the event Kamal Hassan said, “Entrepreneurs in the UAE are extremely dedicated and responsible individuals who are willing to walk the extra mile to achieve their dreams. Innovation Machine is pleased to help them on their startup journey.”
The event will be held from 24th – 26th May 2012, at Manarat Al Saadiyat Island, Galleries side, Hall 3, Abu Dhabi – UAE.
