Oman-Japan Business Forum identifies key sectors to forge stronger economic relations

In their opening address, His Excellency Seiji Morimoto Ambassador of Japan and His Excellency Mohsin bin Khamis Al Balushi, Advisor Ministry of Commerce and Industry, highlighted that business between Japan and Oman is based on mutually complementary relations with a focus on energy resource imports and machine exports given Japan’s superior manufacturing and technical capabilities. Accepted as a ‘Dialogue Partner’ at a special Council of Ministers’ Meeting in 2000, Japanese exports to Oman totaled $2,530m in 2007 and Japan’s imports from Oman $3,583m.

Nisreen Ahmed Jaffer, Director General of Investment Promotion at OCIPED, expressed:

“The Forum is an attestation of OCIPED’s unwavering commitment to contributing to the realization of Vision 2020 set by His Majesty Sultan Qaboos bin Said, through identifying investment opportunities in Oman and the export of Omani origin products to foreign countries. The Forum has witnessed exceptional attendance of more than 100 businessmen and government officials and we remain inspired by the vast opportunities that such positive exchanges present.”

She added, “Oman is currently ranked number one among twenty-two Arab countries in the Arab Economic Freedom Index published in 2007. We are confident that the ongoing efforts by the Government in seeking new opportunities for cooperation with various nations such as Japan will create a stable macro-economic framework and provide the appropriate conditions for economic diversification.”

The Forum concluded by identifying key factors and strategies to promote business relations and the areas to be focused on between the countires.

Sessions addressed Oman’s business environment, infrastructure developments, oil and gas projects and business experiences of Japanese companies specialized in infrastructure development, construction, environment issues and trade. Key speakers included H.E. Mohammed Abdullah Al Mahroqi, Chairman of Electricity and Water Authority, Eng. Nabil Abdullah Al Ghassani, Chief Executive Officer of TAKAML, Eng. Wael Ahmed Al Lawati, Chief Executive Officer of OMRAN, Kotaro Kodama, Executive Director of JETRO Dubai & MENA, in addition to senior representatives from Obayashi Corporation, Hitachi Plant Technologies, Ltd. and Mitsubishi Corporation.
