The first workshop taking place between 9:00-11:30am, facilitated by Prof. Raymond O’ Rourke, Food & Consumer Lawyer in Ireland, in keeping with the central theme of the Conference, will put forth the question of whether setting up a National Food Agency is the solution towards enhancing food safety in Oman.
Prof. O’ Rourke will provide answers to the same by inviting attendees to take a look at similar establishments set up in foreign countries like USA, Canada, EFSA, UK, Ireland, France, Sweden and Finland, contrast it with regulatory bodies in the Middle East like the Saudi Food & Drug Authority (SFDA) and Abu Dhabi Food Control Authority and consider feasibility factors like the make up, advantages, disadvantages, responsibilities, risk analysis, the role of the government for setting up the same in Oman and the effect thereafter on consumers and food businesses.
Government representatives and authorities in charge on the country’s food safety sector will find this session to their benefit when considering the development of a national food safety agency for the country.
The second workshop taking place between 1:00-2:30 pm, facilitated by Mr. William Wood, Director, SFBB Systems Ltd and Development Consultant to the Chartered Institute of Environmental Health on the CIEH Food Safety System for Food Businesses in Oman, will present attendees with a CIEH Food Safety System to stress upon the need for implementing a HACCP Based system for food businesses in Oman.
A HACCP system extends to all stages of a food chain including food production, preparation processes, packaging, distribution etc. Based on this model the CIEH Food Safety System will be useful for food operators, chefs and hygiene managers in developing a preventive approach to food safety.
Mr. Wood will also council attendees on the effective documentation and management of food safety risks, and safe food preparation standards that are in compliance with Oman Food Control regulations.
The 3rd Oman International Food Safety Conference 2012, taking place from 6th -8th November 2012 at the Grand Hyatt, Muscat will draw attention to the latest developments and updates related to food safety and emphasise the need to implement an effective food safety system in the country and raise Oman’s food safety system to an international level.
