The evening was presided over by His Highness Sayyid Haitham Bin Tariq Al-Said, and Her Highness Sayyida Dr Mona Fahad Al Said and brought dignitaries, VIPs , business professionals and key decision makers together in support of this visionary project.
His Highness whose foresight, imagination and commitment to culture has helped drive this project forward, unveiled a model of the library and showcased its’ innovative and creative designs to the enthralled guests.
The Children’s Public Library will be the first of its kind in the region and will offer state-of-the-art facilities and services, creating a cornerstone of community life for children and their families. It will ensure that children of all abilities and levels will have access to a world of knowledge and learning – never before seen in Oman – through its 12, 000 books, cutting edge computer suites and dedicated areas for early learning, youth and young adults. The site will also have specifically designed garden, cafes and bookshops.
Dr Samira Moosa, Chair of the Children’s Public Library announced that the Ministry of Education has become a partner of the Library and thanked His Excellence, Yahya bin Saud Al Sulaimi, Minister of Education for his support. This partnership will provide direct access to public schools in Oman and ensure that, children are encouraged to take full advantage of the many benefits the Library has to offer. The partnership will include a variety of creative and innovative fundraising activities.
Her Highness Dr Mona, Honorary Chair speaking at the event, said:
“The Children’s Public Library will provide a world of opportunities for children and their families. It will allow families to grow and learn together and foster self belief and confidence in oneself and in one’s surroundings.”
Set to opens its doors in the summer of 2011, the Library will be funded by the private sector and offers opportunities for corporate social responsibility action which will have a direct, positive and permanent impact on society.
Dr Samira Moosa, Chair of the Children’s Public Library, said:
“Since the opening of the first public library in 1833, philanthropists from Andrew Carnegie to Bill Gates have recognized that such institutions play a lead role in creating social, economic and cultural benefits. I am delighted that we raised OR113, 000 at the event and want to thank everyone who pledged their support. The philanthropy generated at the event is further testament to His Majesty’s vision and Oman’s commitment to creating an informed and well-balanced society. Through their generous giving, our civic-minded business community has helped ensure that children’s right to access knowledge will be upheld through the Sultanate first Children’s Public Library.“
Dr Samira went on to say, “Fundraising for the Library does not stop here, to ensure that we promote and encourage a culture of reading and library use we must continue to support the library and give benevolently.”
