Traffic Safety Expo 2013: Road Safety top priority in the Sultanate of Oman

Oman: Tuesday, August 20 - 2013 @ 12:17

Further to the directives of His Majesty Sultan Qaboos bin Said in 2010, initiatives within the Sultanate to date have been highlighted.

Traffic Safety Expo will be held between November 11 and 14, 2013 at the Oman International Exhibition Centre, Muscat, Sultanate of Oman, and will be bigger and better than the previous edition, with a fourth day added to the usual three-day event.

Road Safety is a high alert subject for Royal Oman Police (ROP) due to the inordinately high level of serious injuries and deaths caused by road accidents.

The World Health Organisation (WHO), for example, projects that if serious measures or initiatives are not taken, such accidents are set to continue increasing steadily in Oman between new and 2020, meaning that road fatalities are likely to rise by a staggering 80 per cent and put Oman in 3rd place in the global rankings, as compared to its present 7th place. This is somewhere Oman does not want to be.

Omanexpo General Manager Nader Abbas says “The initiative needs a platform to create awareness and the exhibition plays the most significant role out of all mediums but it cannot be successful without active public support and participation.”

“We are pleased to play a significant role in helping the government promote road safety awareness in Oman. We, at Omanexpo, make sure that our events are not only geared towards trade development and advancement, but towards corporate social responsibility as well,” he adds.

The extra day is expected to bring in an estimated additional 15,000 to 20,000 visitors, compared to last year’s 65,000 over a period of three days. This will enable more people to take advantage of the wide range of exhibits organized by Omanexpo, a professional organizer with 27 years of experience in exhibition and conference management.

2010 was the first national event of this type in the Sultanate, marking a major innovation in ROP’s plans to make Oman’s roads accident- or casualty-free. In the three years since this landmark, ROP has worked steadfastly to refine its efforts to create the optimum platform for this vital message.

A range of information material and equipment related to driver and vehicle safety will be on display in a large area hosted by ROP at Traffic Safety Expo. There will also be the strong presence of private organisations involved in road- and vehicle-related activities of various kinds, and driver training institutes and companies involved in vehicle and road technology.
