The key to Gen2’s green success is in the belts. Polyurethane-coated steel belts enable a more compact, energy-efficient machine. Smaller belts mean a smaller sheave and thus the elevator takes up less space in the building. This in turn reduces operating costs. In addition, the Gen2 system’s flat belts and gearless machine do not require any additional lubrication, making the system cleaner for the environment.
Otis also boasts the world’s first green elevator factory in Tianjin, China. The site, verified by Gold-level Leadership in Energy and Environmental Design (LEED) certification, reduces energy usage by at least 25 percent as compared to traditional manufacturing. Sebi Joseph, Area Director Gulf Region, Otis, stated “World-wide Otis is proud to be ‘going green’ with our advanced Gen 2 system. The new generation of elevators is part of the system utilized in the Burj Khalifa, where Otis has supplied and installed 73 elevators, including 22 energy-efficient Gen2.”
Otis Gen2 systems are designed to minimize environmental impact by optimizing the size, materials and weight of components. Gen2 systems are also designed for an efficient shipping process with reduced packaging and more than 95 percent of the materials used in Gen2 systems are recyclable. The new generation of elevators offers LED lighting that last up to 10 times longer than conventional lighting. When combined with an auto-shutoff mode, LED lighting becomes up to 80 percent more energy efficient than conventional lighting.
