A total of three winners of the EBDA’A AWARD held during the 21st, 22nd and 23rd editions of the Abu Dhabi International Jewellery and Watch Show (JWS), will showcase their talent at JCK Las Vegas 2015 – the world’s most premier jewellery trade event, confirmed Reed Exhibitions – the organisers of JWS.

In its second edition, EBDA’A AWARD, the-first-of-its-kind jewellery competition in the UAE announced three first prize winners during JWS 2014, which was held at Abu Dhabi National Exhibition Centre. In partnership with renowned Emirati jewellery artist Azza Al Qubaisi, REED exhibitions launched EBDA’A AWARD in 2013 with the aim to encourage creativity and innovation using local inspirations, and promote careers in the industry. It was open in three categories including daywear jewellery, evening wear and contemporary interpretation of traditional jewellery.

Nour Naboulsi (daywear jewellery), Asma Abdulla (evening wear jewellery) and Hamda Mubarak Al Hamli (contemporary interpretation) were each awarded a trophy and a certificate by Azza Al Qubaisi.

The competitors were judged by a panel of renowned names in the sector that included Ms. Muna Al-Hadad, Ms. Maha Al-sebai and Mr. Rafif Tarabishi.

Ara Fernezian, Divisional Managing Director – UAE, Reed Exhibitions, said, “We launched this new initiative last year to support and nurture young jewellery designers to develop their careers. We’re extremely pleased to collaborate with the inspiring Ms. Azza Al Qubaisi who shares our passion to create bigger and better opportunities for young Emirati jewellery designers.”

He added, “To increase confidence in their award winning work, Reed Exhibitions is pleased to offer 2013, 2014 and 2015 EBDA’A AWARD winners the chance to showcase their jewellery at a leading global jewellery event in 2015. At the JCK Las Vegas trade show, these winning jewellery trend-setters will also get an opportunity to acquaint themselves with unique designs from up and coming designers and the latest collections from established international jewelry artists. It will be a learning experience of sorts and we’re happy to facilitate it.”

The awards were sponsored by Amwaj Jewellery, Ghenej Jewellery and Al Masaood Jewellery who will produce the winning jewellery designs, in association with and supported by renowned Emirati jewellery artist Azza Al Qubaisi and the Gemological Institute of America (GIA) which collaborated with EBDA’A AWARD to mentor participants through educational jewellery courses.

Azza Al Qubaisi said, “I’m happy to be part of this initiative and to see it achieve its goal to inspire young talent in the country. I’m thankful to Reed Exhibitions for supporting my ambition in making this award a bigger success each year. We hope it provides the desired platform for young designers to explore, learn and enter the Emirati and international jewellery market. I thank the sponsors and particularly the jury members for their contribution and dedication to mentor the winners in the coming year.”

In total, EBDA’A AWARD 2014 saw double the number of designs and participants enter the competition.

On mentoring young talent, jury member and designer of Ghenej jewellery, Muna Al-Hadad, said, “As a jury member and sponsor at EBDA’A AWARD, it is essential for me to help rising designers establish a name for themselves in the market and begin their career. As an Emirati jewellery designer, I am keen on diversifying the economy and promoting the arts sector among the younger generation, and I hope that this competition will help us achieve that.”

Commenting on the partnership, Nirupa Bhatt, Managing Director of GIA in India and the Middle East, said, “Our objective was to help participants learn about gemology and design. The courses were created to complement their talent in design by educating them on gem stones, particularly colored stones, as understanding the characteristics of gemstones helps create innovative designs. In addition, the courses provided them with guidance to help establish themselves and understand the market and retail selling.”

Nour Naboulsi, first place winner in the day wear category’ said, “I heard about EBDA’A AWARD from family members and they encouraged me to take part in the competition. My passion for jewellery had only begun a few months ago. My design was inspired by Sheikh Mohammed Bin Rashid Al Maktoum’s hand gesture ‘win, victory and Love ’, as I look up to him. Winning first place in EBDA’A competition has given me the confidence I needed in myself and my talent.”

Asma Abdallla, first place winner in the evening wear category said, “I am delighted to be one of the winners in EBDAA AWARD for the second consecutive year. As a young Emirati designer, my collection ‘UAE Pride’ was inspired by Emirati heritage infused with contemporary aspects. The design consists of Arabic calligraphy and the logo of Expo 2020 – an outstanding UAE achievement globally. The unique and expressive design collection can be worn during bridal events and national day in particular. EBDA’A Award has helped me develop my talent with the help of renowned UAE designers such as Azza Al Qubaisi.”
