Colin Finnegan, engineering director at SPD group, was awarded the prestigious title and crowned with a bespoke Stetson for his outstanding achievements and contributions to the Middle East’s energy sector.
Thousands of the energy industry’s crème de la crème were kitted out in their most glamorous outfits to witness the crowning and an entertainment extravaganza courtesy of the cast of Grease Lightening, flown in from London’s West End.
Finnegan arrived in style in a traditional all-American Mustang convertible and his crowning was celebrated with a dazzling display of fireworks, as over 2,500 guests spent the evening being rocked through the ages by some of the world’s greatest performers.
SPD, is a well project management company, with international bases in the UK, South East Asia and the Middle East. Colin co-founded the SPD group in 2002 to provide quality drilling engineering services to the Middle East region in 2002 and has over 18 years of experience in the drilling industry. His expertise range from onshore and offshore development drilling, having worked in Europe, South East Asia, South America and the Middle East.
The award, now in its sixth year, was founded and organised by Reflex Publishing, responsible for energy industry leading publications Pipeline magazine and Future Fuels & Energies. The Oil Barons Ball is the largest gala event of its kind and has quickly become one of the must attend social events of the year, with the tickets selling out weeks in advance.
Mr Finnegan, said:
“I am honoured to have been crowned this years Oil Baron, it is a fantastic achievement both personally and professionally. The whole event has been an incredible experience and I hope everyone enjoyed themselves as much as I did. It has once again been a very successful year at SPD, since establishing the company in 2002 we have experienced phenomenal growth and have doubled in size year on year. Myself and the team are now looking forward to the challenges and the rewards that the next 12 months will bring.”
Eileen Michael, group publishing director for Reflex Publishing, said: “The evening was a fantastic success and Colin is a very deserving Oil Baron. He has made a remarkable contribution to the region’s energy sector over the past year with SPD.
“Everyone had a great evening and the entertainment was second to none. We are already looking forward to preparations getting underway for next year.”
The Oil Barons’ Ball 2008 also hosted a special silent charity auction to raise money for Friends of Cancer Patients (FOCP), which aims to educate and raise awareness of cancer as well as provide support and financial aid to families affected by the disease. Her Excellency Sheikha Lubna Al Qasimi Minister of Foreign Trade attended the event and appealed for all attendees to give generously to the charity.
The money raised from the auction will be donated in full to Friends of Cancer Patients and will be put to good use in helping educate families and individuals on the risks of cancer and the ways in which some changes to modern, every day living, can help to substantially reduce these risks. The organisation also supports sufferers and those close to them by providing necessary care services and financial aid as well as promoting important research into the disease.
Donations on the evening included a car from SPD for 11-year-old Mustafa, who has leukemia and has to make a long journey from Sharjah to Al Ain at least once a week for treatment. His wish for his family to have a car so as to make the journey to and from his appointments much easier and less tiring has now come true, thanks to the company’s generosity.
