The event – which was originally formed as an oil and gas industry event has grown into one of the most anticipated social events in the UAE’s calendar. With more than 2,500 VIP’s and industry influencers set to attend the event at the Dubai Media City Amphitheatre this year, the organisers hope to set a new precedent in terms of donations.
All monies from the silent auction will be donated to the charity, which provides support to cancer patients and their families across the UAE, as well as funding research and education. This year the event is poised to become one of the largest fund-raisers in the region.
Over Dhs400,000 was raised in 2009, all of which went towards paying for vital operations, rent, school fees, transport and leisure activities for families struggling to cope after being stricken down by cancer. This year funds raised will go towards a mobile unit which will take breast cancer testing facilities to remote regions.
Eileen Michael, founder of the Oil Barons Ball and managing director of Reflex Publishing, said: “This year we want to smash all previous records for donations. Each year the generosity of the guests is truly remarkable but it is crucial that we continue to support those most vulnerable.”
“Without the generous contributions made by our guests, many families would struggle to cope with the emotional and financial implications of cancer. Often the main breadwinner will find it difficult to provide for the family. This is where Oil Barons Ball helps by providing FOCP the funds it needs to continue its fantastic life-changing work.”
A range of ‘money can’t buy’ items will be available to bid on during the evening. In previous years prestigious lots have included signed sporting paraphernalia, dream holidays and ‘one of a kind’ jewellery.
Dr. Sawsan Al Madhi, Sectary General of Friends of Cancer Patients said: ‘FOCP is extremely fortunate to have the support of the Oil Barons Ball. Over the years they have been extremely generous allowing us to grant life changing wishes for more and more children each year.”
The ball has become recognised for its mix of charity and entertainment. Over the last eight years, bands like the Four Tops have been joined by some of the world’s best tribute acts, and breathtaking ‘West End’ shows, each taking to the stage to wow the crowds. 2010 will be no different as guests will enjoy a rock ‘n’ roll themed evening.
The annual ball – held under the patronage of H. E. Sheikh Ahmed Bin Saeed Al Maktoum, President Department of Civil Aviation Government of Dubai and Chairman of the Emirates Group – also sees the crowning of the ‘Oil Baron of The Year’, in conjunction with Reflex Publishing’s Pipeline magazine.
The prestigious title is voted for by those working within the oil and gas industry and pays tribute to those who have made an outstanding achievement or a continuing contribution to the energy sector.
