With the start of the academic year 2014 – 2015, the Roads and Transport Authority (RTA) has resumed awareness programs targeting school students in Dubai, and called upon drivers and parents to exercise utmost caution while driving in the vicinity of schools to ensure students’ safety and avert traffic accidents.
Engineer Maitha bin Udai, CEO of RTA Traffic and Roads Agency, said, “The school awareness program; which is initiated by the Agency in coordination with the Ministry of Education, Dubai Educational Zone and the Knowledge and Human Development Authority, will cover kindergartens and all school grades in public & private schools.”
She reiterated RTA’s keenness to shoulder responsibilities in diffusing traffic culture among community members in a bid to reduce traffic accidents and related deaths, in keeping with RTA’s vision of ensuring ‘Safe and Smooth Transport for All.’ She also called upon bus drivers and students’ parents to focus while driving especially in the vicinity of schools, indicating that the main causes of traffic accidents in these areas were misjudgment towards road users, negligence and lapse in concentration as well as reckless & frivolous driving.
“The Agency, in cooperation with Dubai Police, Dubai Health Authority and the Emirates Transport (Dubai Branch), is taking part in a project developed by the RTA entitled ‘Generations Safety is a Shared Responsibility,’ which aims at consolidating public & private efforts to raise traffic awareness among students and provide the traffic safety means to reduce traffic accidents and related deaths & injuries. Moreover, modern awareness trends focus on coordinating efforts to ultimately serve the common and shared objectives of ensuring security & safety in any district or emirate,” she said.
“The awareness activities to be undertaken by the Agency at schools include diffusing several purpose-built awareness messages diffused via RTA’s social media portals such as YouTube, Twitter and Facebook in addition to key educational e-forum websites frequently visited by students, parents and teachers, besides focusing on the steps that should be followed by students & drivers when driving in proximity of schools,” she noted.
Bin Udai added, “The Agency’s Traffic awareness supervisors would intensify their visits to schools and kindergartens at the beginning of the school year in order to distribute awareness leaflets among students through school broadcasts, awareness lectures, and Salama Magazine whose September issue included a variety of cartoons and stories focusing on the objectives of the campaign.”
In this context; Bin Udai noted, “The Agency’s traffic safety and awareness teams had drafted educational and awareness programs targeting students, parents and drivers, since ensuring traffic safety in Dubai streets is a priority for the RTA, especially during seasons when traffic movement in the emirate witnesses some changes such as Back to School season and weather vagaries, which are the main awareness topics that will be focused on during the fourth quarter of this year.”
Bin Udai urged school bus drivers and parents, to observe the proper traffic rules when dropping off their children at schools, avoid stopping in wrong places, and never leave children cross streets unattended. She highlighted the importance of preventing students from disembarking from the left door of the vehicle (behind the driver), and advised parents to use the rear door security locks.
