Jumeriah Rotary, a registered group of businessmen and women who work towards helping local and international projects, sponsored the planting of these indigenous trees at the Safa School for boys.
This all formed part of the United Nation’s Environmental Programme’s Billion Tree Campaign, aimed at planting trees to reverse the damaging effects humans have on the environment.
Emirates Environmental Group pledged to plant 1 million trees as part of this worldwide campaign in 2007 and, having already surpassed that target last year, decided to extend their efforts into 2008.
Members of Jumeirah Rotary Club joined EEG staff as well as teachers and pupils of Safa School in getting their hands dirty for the first planting in the school grounds. There was specific emphasis on planting only indigenous trees as these can tolerate the salinity and scarcity of water in the region.
This latest initiative by Jumeirah Rotary Club comes just a few months after the organisation announced its partnership with Planet Finance UAE and Sunduq in sponsoring a project aimed at reducing poverty among the rural areas of Afghanistan by developing sustainable agriculture through the creation of a microfund.
