The Roads and Transport Authority (RTA) and Tristar Company; a traffic safety specialist, have held an educative program aimed at honing safe driving skills of truck and bus drivers.

Engineer Hussain Al Banna, Director of Traffic, Traffic and Roads Agency, stressed the importance of continuously upgrading the skills of drivers, especially heavy truck and bus drivers, as traffic accidents involving heavy vehicles often result in considerable number of causalities, besides that statistics reveal that truck and bus drivers are considered the most dangerous category amongst road users.

“We are therefore keen on offering heavy vehicle drivers more training and qualification exposure after obtaining their driving licenses. In this regard we cooperate with the concerned traffic safety specialists and mega transportation companies to intensify the means of stepping up cooperation towards raising the traffic awareness of drivers,” said Al Banna.

“The traffic awareness programs target all community segments, and focusing on truck drivers is a priority for the Department. Over the past months, we have run several awareness campaigns, and published quality educative leaflets & posters dedicated to truck drives, and distributed them at highways across the Emirate specially at Jebel Ali, Fruits & Vegetables Market, Heavy Vehicles Testing & Registration Center, Drivers Training Center, and Ghuwaifat Border Post.

“In the near future we will be targeting bus and truck drivers through certain messages after compiling a comprehensive database about them in cooperation with the RTA Licensing Agency and telecommunications companies in the UAE. Procedures taken by the RTA towards heavy truck drivers are not restricted to awareness aspects but are also focused on providing highway truck stops, and one of them was opened last may in the context of RTA’s traffic safety strategy,” added Al Banna.

“Coordination is in hand with a host of firms and entities for staging the awareness event which was held by the RTA in the Public Transport premises,” continued Al Banna who expressed appreciation for Tristar Company which exhibited a high sense of social responsibility and teamed with RTA’s Traffic, and Monitoring & Enforcement Departments in holding several awareness events oriented to truck and bus drivers.

The Public Bus Drivers Training Center at Al Awir saw immense turnout of truck and bus drivers as well as bus inspectors from the RTA and the Dubai Police. The British expert in drivers training Allen Timms, who works as instructor at the British RoSPA Company, delivered a lecture entitled: “Let’s go home safe” in which he narrated the traffic conditions, traffic mortality rates in some countries, and the main factors triggering traffic accidents. He indicated that 95% of these factors were attributed to human faults, adding that “good driving hinges on taking appropriate decisions.”

The event also witnessed cultural & educative quizzes including distribution of several prizes to drivers.
