United Arab Emirates: Monday, November 17 - 2008 @ 13:27

Adopting such a step is viewed as an effective contribution by companies and institutions to easing traffic tailbacks caused by massive numbers of private vehicles on road.

RTA Public Transport Agency launched “Awselni” service and developed a logo affixed on buses dedicated for this service.

These buses are new, highly sophisticated and convenient which had been imported from world-class manufacturers.

Mohammed Abu Baker Al Hashemi, Director of Planning and Business Development at the Public Transport Agency, said that the concept was well received & embraced by a large segment of RTA employees.

“Introduction of the service followed compilation of a comprehensive study by Mobility Management & Transport Policies Programmes Section at Planning & Business Development Dep’t of the Agency to achieve this objective. An extensive study had already been conducted to examine the status of mass transit system in the emirate which stressed that RTA employees have to take the initiative to contribute to alleviating traffic jams. The step will undoubtedly improve traffic flow, curb regrettable traffic accidents and lessen environmental pollution.”

said Al-Dosari.

“Public Transport Agency introduced this service over three phases. Phase I included lifting employees from Main RTA Office at Umm Rumool to and from their places of residences in Dubai, Sharjah & Ajman. The service, which started on 13/06/2008, involved deployment of 5 buses, in addition to 2 buses for night service employees. Phase II, which started on 24/07/2008, involved the deployment of one bus to lift Public Transport and Dubai Taxi agencies employees at Muhaisina.”

“On 04/08/2008, Phase III was unleashed with the deployment of 5 buses to lift the employees of Bus Depot at Al-Aweer, employees working three shifts in Maintenance & Services Workshop in the same area, bus drivers and employees of Dubai Taxi Workshop. The total number of buses deployed has now reached 13 buses and the number of subscribers to the service is as high as 525 employees, whereas the number of actual users reached 471 employees.”

commented Al Hashemi.

“As the RTA set the pace in this drive, companies as well as government and private organizations in the emirate of Dubai are invited to follow suit. They are encouraged to introduce Awselni Service to their employees to contribute to easing the psychological and body pressure sustained on daily basis by employees while driving their vehicles through congested roads.”

Public Transport Agency established Mobility Management & Transport Policies Programmes Section at Planning & Business Development Dep’t in the Agency and tasked it with many roles.

These include addressing private requests pertinent to improving the status of public transport in the emirate of Dubai through encouraging the public to use public transport modes and minimize the use of private vehicles, after ensuring that proper alternatives are in place to achieve this objective.
