WAITRO currently has 160 members in 80 countries and co-operates with over 500 institutions and international agencies worldwide.
The focus of this year’s EXCOM meeting in Dubai will be to discuss and set into action, options to intensify the UAE activities of the world association, for the benefit of the country’s investments towards innovation and industrial excellence as per the latest state of the art.
According to Dr. Dieter R. Fuchs, President and Chairman of WAITRO, “We are extremely happy to be having one of WAITRO’s most important events in Dubai, which has created a niche for itself as a preferred destination for events and exhibitions, given its strategic location, facilities available and above all, the warm hospitality of the people. Also, with its penchant for innovation and pursuit towards a knowledge economy, Dubai is the ideal location this year.”
The EXCOM comprises of representatives from each of the different zones respectively namely Middle East and North Africa, Europe, Africa, Latin America and Carribean, North America and Asia Pacific. In addition, representatives from two international agencies are invited to serve on the committee. These high ranking delegates meet twice a year and the venue is rotated globally between the regions of member locations. By this calculation, Dubai may again get its turn to host this event only after 20 years. The WAITRO EXCOM meeting and related events are scheduled from March 3rd to March 7th.
Dr. Dieter R. Fuchs, based in Dubai permanently since last year further commented,” The key factor for industrial success is to tap into international know-how pools and to speed up innovation. WAITRO is committed to offer its competencies and to welcome more UAE organizations as members and partners in this effort.”
The EXCOM is the strategic governing board of WAITRO and in charge of the operations and initiatives, supported by the Secretariat General which is based in Malaysia. At present new initiatives are under way with a growing member base in the MENA countries.
“We would also like to extend our appreciation to our partners in Dubai, Technopark and S.S. Lootah International in supporting us during this event,” added Dr. Fuchs.
In his position as General Manager of Fraunhofer Middle East, a leading European Research Institution with a strong strategic partnership with S.S. Lootah Group and the Swiss-Austrian consultants of Group One, Dr. Fuchs promotes the extension of regional activities under the umbrella of the World Association, to support any initiative to improve innovation-related framework conditions and partnerships with UAE and the neighbouring countries. Concrete industrial projects are already in action with S.S. Lootah Group Companies and a strategic innovation-related cooperation with Dubai Techno Park was signed recently.
Besides business-oriented initiatives, WAITRO has also established first links with local universities in Dubai, Sharjah and Ajman and will engage further in capacity building projects in training and higher education.
WAITRO is an independent, non-governmental and non-profit association with focus on sharing experiences in research management and cross-cutting issues of the whole innovation chain in industry and also the public sector. WAITRO also facilitates transfer of research results and technical know-how and promotes technological research and capability building in developing countries. WAITRO identifies and promotes fields of research suitable for international collaboration, new opportunities and markets and aims to enhance capabilities in management of application-oriented research and development and for technological and scientific organizations.
