This year’s cycling event – sponsored by Al Eqbal Investment Company, Jordan Hospital, Warwick Winter Valley Resort and Spa, Mlabbas, U Water, Ro’ya T.V., Majaz, Mood 92 and 102.5 Beat FM radio stations – will gather 200 cyclists from all over Jordan in an attempt to raise money for 3 select Welfare Association projects in Gaza. Widely expected to be the biggest cycling event to have taken place in the Dead Sea, participants will bike 15 kilometers at the lowest point on earth to support the worthy cause.
The initiative – supported by all the cycling clubs in the Kingdom including Cycling Jordan, Bike Rush, Nader Bikes and Bedouin Bikes – revolves around keeping people informed about the suffering of the besieged people in Palestine and raise needed funds in order to support the country. The Cycle for Palestine team, which works with other youth groups, value youth as change agents and share a strong belief in their ability to contribute to the development of the Palestinian community.
Since its foundation, Cycling for Palestine’s portfolio has continuously grown, having already completed two challenges. In 2010, WAY organized the cycling event in Amman which raised around $10,000 while in 2011, the cyclists amassed around $45,000 and hosted the international Cycling4Gaza group in Jordan.
Through the donations it received last year, the Association was able to support three organizations in Gaza including The National Society for Rehabilitation, Society for the Care of the Handicapped and the Nour El Marifa Association. The projects upgraded the teaching methods and skills of teachers, improved the learning difficulties of children, and provided psychosocial support and therapy to youngsters in Khan Younis and Rafah.
The financial contributions received this year will be focused towards providing orphans with a safe and protective educational environment as well as improving the well-being of vulnerable widowed mothers in Gaza and the North Governorate.
