Attending the press conference at Mowasalat’s premises today, Mark Vidler, WOQOD’s Marketing Manager, stated “Qatar Fuel ‘WOQOD’ is delighted to have the opportunity to work with Mowasalat on this project to assess the feasibility of using LPG as a fuel for their fleet of taxi’s.
This initiative by Mowasalat, encouraged by the Supreme Council of the Environment, is visionary and is another example of the progressive, responsible and excellent management at Mowasalat that has much improved Qatar’s public road transportation system in a very short time. Mowasalat is a real example of a new company with a strong sense of social responsibility delivering excellence to its customers in its area of expertise. We understand that this is the first use of LPG as a fuel for road vehicles in the GCC.”
Vidler continued, “LPG is widely used as a fuel for road vehicles globally and when handled correctly is a safe alternative fuel to gasoline and diesel. Earlier this year the global oil company BP ran a workshop for WOQOD and Mowasalat here in Qatar and started our joint learning on how to benefit from this fuel.
Vehicles fuelled by LPG, commonly referred to as Autogas, create lesser air pollutants generally compared to gasoline and diesel fuelled vehicles. They also tend to run quieter so reducing noise pollution. WOQOD will now assist Mowasalat in the running of Autogas on a larger number of vehicles to assess the performance improvement and to see if even wider use of Autogas is applicable.
Converting gasoline engine vehicles to run on Autogas has been achieved safely on millions of cars globally and today all the major vehicle manufacturers produce duel fuel vehicles. Conversions need to be carried out carefully and we intend to work with Mowasalat and government bodies, especially Civil Defence, to certify professional companies for these conversions.
A typical conversion cost for a medium size passenger car is around $1,500 and takes about half a day. Autogas tanks fitted to vehicles are rigorously tested to maintain their integrity in the worst kind of vehicle accidents. Buses also can run on Autogas however the conversion of a diesel engine to run on Autogas is not common as diesel engines run on a compression system, instead of a fuel injection system.
WOQOD as the sole distributor of LPG in Qatar aspires to live up to the example set by Mowasalat. We have invested in new road tankers to serve our customers and are implementing a small bulk LPG strategy to industries, restaurants, apartment buildings, hotels and villas. WOQOD is investing more than QR 120 million in a state-of-the-art LPG bottling and bulk distribution centre in the new industrial area of Doha. This will be commissioned by the end of 2008. Our plans include the improvement in the current 12 kg LPG cylinders available in the market today.”
