UAE celebrates fourth Social Media Day with focus on customer service

Hosted and organised by McCollins Media, a Dubai based Digital Marketing and PR agency, the event had over 120 attendees participate and engage in insightful conversations.

Taking on from last year’s theme of connecting SME’s with the community, this year the focus was on improving customer service through social media. With the rapid acceptance of Social media as a key presence for brands globally, the brand-customer gap has reduced drastically.

Customers are now empowered to directly speak with brands without the lengthy processes involved with visiting company websites to open the lines of communication and receive a response. Often, these responses are received by customers in real time with the activation of dedicated Social Media.

According to statistics, there are over 3.6 million active Facebook users and over 300,000 twitter users in the UAE. The UAE alone generates over 2.5 million tweets a day.

2012 also saw an increased interest towards Pinterest and Instagram, with Vine soon becoming a quick favourite.

Meghna Kothari, Director, McCollins Media opened the event. Summarising the evolution of Social media over the last year she highlighted, “Social media has become an integral part of a brand’s marketing strategy. It’s great to see the enthusiasm of the industry as well as clients in discussing the various aspects of channels available and the challenges they bring with it”.

Hussein M. Dajani, Digital Manager, UAE highlighted the role of Social Media in Customer Service in detail with Dave Crane closing the session with a discussion on ‘Giving brands a personality via Social Media’. Both speakers engaged the audience through personal experiences and initiated two way conversations, a must for brands on social media.

Post the talks the event was open to networking which has always been the highlight of the social media celebrations. Partnering brands Fujifilm, Rainforest Café and Hamley’s provided ample entertainment with photo booths and mascots.

Social Media Day is a global event first introduced by social networking news site Mashable.com in 2010. It is held in 275 cities worldwide every June 30th to celebrate the ‘Connected generation around the world’’ Now in its fourth year, the #UAEsmDAY is an event by the community for the community whereby no money exchanges hands, only business cards and ideas.
