Integrating peace values into early childhood education programs can promote peace, according to Inspire Children’s Nursery in Dubai, which is launching OneTribe, a unique peace education program in the region. Designed and structured by early learning specialists at Inspire, the program is layered across the highly-acclaimed Creative Curriculum®, a leading American early childhood education program already offered at the nursery. Built around core peace pillars, which focus on ethics and character, OneTribe aims to promote tolerance and understanding from the formative years.
“It has been proven that early childhood experiences play a crucial role in shaping our lives as adults, and emerging evidence strongly supports the integration of peace education in the early years as a fundamental tool for shaping a peaceful world for future generations,” revealed Lisa Lewis, Nursery Manager, Inspire Children’s Nursery Dubai.
Explaining that very few operative early childhood peace education models exist across the world, Ms. Lewis added, “With OneTribe, we hope to make a modest contribution towards supporting worldwide early years peace education initiatives such as the United Nations Early Childhood Peace Consortium launched in September 2013 in partnership with key players such as Yale University, AÇEV Foundation and the Fetzer Institute.”
An enriching experiential program, OneTribe helps children explore cultural diversity through songs, stories, crafts, games & events, whilst focusing on peace values through its six core pillars: knowledge of self & connection to others; joy in diversity; imagination & playfulness; care & love of nature; creative conflict resolution & sense of justice; and global awareness. The nursery team has devised a set of joyful daily and weekly peace rituals such as the Peace Pledge, Tribe Time, Yoganory, Traveling Trekkers, Imagin-o-globe and Hakawati, that highlight play-based learning, while outreach initiatives such as Peace Pals will see nursery children communicating with children around the world. The program will also have a strong element of geo-literacy, which combines science, numeracy, literacy and geography, enabling little learners to better understand ecosystems, habitats and the world around.
The OneTribe program will be launched at Inspire Children’s Nursery at their family fun day on Saturday, 13 September, 2014, from 10 a.m. to 1 p.m. The free event is open to the community, though RSVP is recommended. Parents may call 04-3955473 or email: [email protected] to confirm their attendance.
“We invite parents to join us and experience some of our rituals, meet the teachers, tour the nursery and enjoy a fun morning with exciting children’s activities including movement and yoga classes, crafts and more!” said Ms. Lewis, adding that the nursery team has been working hard over the summer, transforming the nursery environment with discovery zones including an ocean-themed zone in our indoor play area, and an around-the-world themed community and dramatic play area. “We’re eagerly looking forward to the fall, where we welcome children to this exciting new program!”
