Some of the UAE’s most dedicated young volunteers were honoured at a recognition ceremony held by the Emirates Foundation for Youth Development’s Takatof Programme for Social Volunteering.

More than 250 male and female Takatof volunteers along with the Foundation’s work team, UAE officials and some of the nation’s pre-eminent volunteering and community service leaders were present at the recognition ceremony held at the Abu Dhabi Armed Forces Club.

The event honoured team captains and area supervisors from all across the country for their remarkable volunteer efforts in organizing the 2013 Formula 1 Etihad Airways Abu Dhabi Grand Prix and the 2013 FIFA U-17 World Cup.

In his keynote addresses at the ceremony the Emirati motor-racing champion Mohammed Ben Sulayem, President of the Automobile and Touring Club in the UAE and Vice President of the FIA, spoke of his personal experiences and highlighted the important role volunteering had in building an individual’s personality and aspirations and helping them realise personal hopes and ambitions.

Dr Ben Sulayem is one of the most powerful figures in motor racing and recently on was appointed by the Federation Internationale de l’Automobile (FIA), the governing body for world motorsport, to oversee a task force charged with plotting a 10-year plan for the sport’s worldwide development.

Maytha Al Habsi, Chief Programme Officer at Emirates Foundation for Youth Development, said, “I’d like to take the opportunity to thank you, our volunteers who have given generously of it this year. Your contribution to organising and running Takatof programmes has contributed to the development of the UAE and the betterment of its people.”

“Along the way, through the people you have met and the time and compassion given, you have had the opportunity to explore yourselves, grow in confidence and develop your communication and management abilities- skills which will enhance your capacity to fulfill your individual expectations both personally and in your career,” she said.

Al Habsi called upon the volunteers to continue their work in volunteering and community service because this brings you self-satisfaction and self-realisation.

“It teaches you how you can feel with others and above all offers you the opportunity to give back to the country,” she reiterated.

Speaking after the event Takatof volunteer, Sultan al Ameri, said volunteering gave Takatof members the opportunity to learn new skills particularly in communication and the organising and managing of volunteer programmes.

“The recognition we received today was moral push for us and motivation to pursue our volunteer work and give more to our community,” al Ameri said.
