The Josoor Institute conducted a one day workshop exclusively for the Qatar Stars League (QSL) players and management. The course titled ‘working with the media’ focused on familiarising the players with the media landscape.
Established in December 2013, the Josoor Institute was inspired and developed by the Supreme Committee for Delivery and Legacy. It is a centre of excellence that aims to train many of the people who will play an integral role in Qatar’s hosting of the 2022 FIFA World Cup™, individuals who will then have the knowledge to deliver large-scale sporting and non-sporting events across the region long after 2022.
Since its inception, the Josoor Institute has conducted four short courses for professionals and athletes in the sports and events industries and one outreach day for university students in Qatar. The courses have garnered high levels of participation and interest from attendees.
The short courses have covered a range of topics such as the business of football, career management for athletes, running major events, sports marketing and public relations. The course for the QSL players was designed to cater to their unique needs, explaining the regional media landscape and equipping them to have a better working relationship with the media.
Commenting on the relevance of the course for the players, Mr Hani Ballan, Deputy CEO of the QSL said, “At the QSL we aim to focus on the all-round development of our players. As they are the pioneers of football in Qatar, we want to equip them with all the necessary skills so they can put their best foot forward not only on but off the pitch as well. With the Josoor Institute we now have global expertise being shared locally, which helps us professionalise the league on all fronts”.
The day long course conducted by the Josoor Institute was divided across three sessions. The sessions were delivered by two prominent speakers; that is Rhodri Williams from Al Kass television and Alex Coulson from IMG. Williams is a highly experienced broadcaster who currently produces and presents Al Kass Television’s English language coverage of the QSL. Coulson is the Director of PR and Social Media at IMG and has nine years of sport, event and lifestyle communications experience working across a range of blue chip brands, events and federations in both the UK and internationally.

We are proud that the players found today’s course fruitful and that it helped them develop skills, which will be greatly beneficial for their overall professional development,” said Mr Mushtaq Al-Waeli, interim CEO for the Josoor Institute. He added, “After a successful launch in December last year that was attended by 350 attendees from 23 countries we are now preparing for our next set of short courses that will be spread across the coming year”.
