A unique Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) between Qatar University and Politecnico di Torino (Polito) Italy signed on June 18 will establish a double Master’s and Doctoral degree program in science and engineering disciplines which will be available to students from QU’s College of Engineering (CENG) and Polito.
The aim of the agreement is to expand collaboration between the two institutions and to enable students from both sides to avail of the academic and research excellence that characterize the graduate programs of the respective institutions. It also presents a cultural study-abroad experience for both sets of students.
The agreement was signed by QU Vice President and Chief Academic Officer Dr Mazen Hasna, and Polito Vice Rector for Research and Technology Transfer and International Affairs Prof Erico Macii in the presence of QU President Prof Sheikha Abdulla Al-Misnad, VP and Chief Financial Officer Dr Humaid Al-Misfaa, CENG Dean Dr Rashid Alammari, Associate Dean for Research and Graduate Programs Prof Abdelmagid Hammuda, QU Scholarships & Partnerships Office Director Mr Cesar Wazen, and CENG members.
In the terms of the MoU, the degree programs will be conducted in CENG departments and at Polito and will include research and study activities at the two institutions. Graduate students enrolled in the program may take courses and the associated exams at each of the two institutions, in accordance with the study curriculum. Each institution will separately examine and evaluate the progress of the students annually or with the prescribed frequency.
Commenting on the MoU, Dr Hasna said: “This is the start of a series of cooperation activities that will benefit students and faculty from both institutions. It is in line with our goal to broaden our students’ horizons by providing opportunities for them to expand themselves academically and culturally at leading institutions such as Polito. It also serves the objectives and values of Qatar National Vision 2030, the development and Qatarization strategies, and the country’s stated ambitions towards a knowledge-based economy”.
Prof Macii noted that the MoU is as addition to the longstanding collaboration between QU and Polito which has resulted in academic exchanges and enhanced relations between the two institutions. “It will benefit the postgraduate students who will join programs at both universities, and will serve to move the academic collaboration forward”, he added.
Dr Alammari said “This is a golden opportunity for CENG students to share such an experience with their colleagues at Polito – both sides will benefit immeasurably from it. Such a collaboration will no doubt result in dynamic changes on the academic and research fronts of both institutions. This highlights the College’s role as a driver of excellence in engineering education in Qatar which is complemented by partnerships with top institutions such as Polito”
