Qatar Foundation International (QFI), a US-based member of Qatar Foundation (QF) dedicated to connecting cultures and advancing global citizenship through education, in partnership with the Language Center of the Translation and Interpreting Institute (TII), an institute of Hamad bin Khalifa University (HBKU), announced the start of an intensive three-week summer Arabic language program taking place at Education City.
The TII summer program aims to provide high school students studying Arabic with a unique opportunity to continue their learning after the academic year comes to an end.
“We are excited to be working in conjunction with TII’s Language Center to offer students studying Arabic the opportunity to fully immerse themselves in the language and culture through this program, especially as the resources for these students to continue their Arabic studies during the summer months are extremely limited,” said Maggie Mitchell Salem, Executive Director of QFI. “Bringing these young people together with their Qatari peers to engage in cross-cultural interactions is a truly effective way for them to learn from each other and become more global citizens,” she added.
Mr. Mounir Ouanaimi, Director of the TII Language Center, said, “At the Translation and Interpreting Institute we believe that Qatar is on its way to become a leading country in Arabic language immersion and cultural exchange programs. Our collaboration with QFI is a first step towards becoming a main provider of these programs for a growing international student population that is increasingly curious about the Arab world and its language, and about Qatar and its unique culture.”
Ten students were selected and sponsored by QFI and TII to participate in TII’s program from US cities including Chicago, Los Angeles, Washington DC, Portland, and Lehi. During the course of the three weeks, students will spend about eight hours per day honing their Arabic language skills and engaging with Qatari peers. Students will also learn about Qatari culture through excursions to the local market and museums, as well as have the opportunity to participate in a community service project and learn about volunteerism.
In addition to designing the course, TII has invited notable Qatari speakers to address the students and will introduce them to some of the academic programs provided by HBKU’s partner universities.
