Texas A&M University at Qatar hosted a lecture on ExxonMobil’s the outlook for energy and the latest trends in the oil and gas industry 24 April at the University’s Engineering Building in Education City. The lecture, organized by the career services office, was delivered by Hend Darwish, sales negotiator, and Nash Stewart, project development manager for ExxonMobil Qatar Inc. The event, which was open to the University’s faculty, staff and students, attracted an audience of more than hundred attendees from the University’s four engineering programs; petroleum, electrical, chemical and mechanical.

Karim Youssef, research assistant of petroleum engineering at the University and one of the attending students, said, “Energy is the main driver of economic growth, so it is important to be brought up to speed regarding the latest developments in the oil and gas industry. It was very enlightening to hear ExxonMobil’s experts talking about the state of alternative energy sources and technologies.”

In light of the ever-increasing global demand for energy, Darwish and Stewart discussed the drivers of energy for the coming year and the expected challenges that will be faced. Energy plays a fundamental role in powering economies, enabling the conveniences of modern life, and supporting progress and development. Thus, ExxonMobil’s challenge is to continuously develop new energy solutions in a safe, secure, and environmentally responsible manner.

As project development manager for ExxonMobil Qatar, Stewart brings more than 25 years of civil engineering expertise to partnership projects with RasGas and Qatargas. As sales negotiator for ExxonMobil Qatar, Hend Darwish is responsible for LNG sales contracts. Her background is in IT and she has 10 years of experience with her company, including an assignment in the UK.

“At ExxonMobil Qatar, we continuously engage students and youth in our community outreach programs,” Stewart said. “Our overall objective is to fulfill our obligation to the Human Development pillar of Qatar National Vision 2030, fostering a generation of technical experts and leaders who can add value locally, and compete globally, so as to help ensure that as economies grow, so will the capacity to meet the ensuing demand for increases in energy.

“The success of today’s presentation was indicated by the interest it generated from the students, and the insightful questions they had about the industry, its present and its future.”

Darwish said, “The energy industry is such an important one in today’s world, and also a very exciting one. Last week’s session was about engaging students in the dialogue on the world’s energy market and resources, so they can better understand how and why governments, industry and other stakeholders seek new solutions to ensure energy systems underpin 21st century requirements of economic growth, sustainability and energy security, “The students at Texas A&M at Qatar showed great interest in the industry, and the work we do on a day-to-day basis. I believe that there is great potential for many of them to be a part of the industry in the future, and to share the responsibility of meeting consumer demand, ensuring efficiency and reducing emissions that come with it.”
