University of Wollongong in Dubai embraces enterprise mobility

: Tuesday, June 17 - 2014 @ 11:24

The University of Wollongong in Dubai (UOWD) has deployed Citrix mobile workspaces technology across the organization to reduce costs, increase productivity and ultimately improve employee satisfaction. As a result, university employees are able to access data and apps via any device, anywhere – allowing greater efficiency and flexibility. The project has ultimately allowed UOWD to achieve an initial 47 per cent reduction in capital IT expenditure costs and an average 21 per cent reduction per annum in both capital and operational expenditure costs.

The university has deployed Citrix® XenDesktop®, XenApp®, XenServer® and NetScaler® technology to centralize all applications and desktops in the datacenter, delivering those applications and desktops back out to users on demand, to any device, anywhere. IT user satisfaction has increased significantly, and the 500 PCs used throughout the University had reduced to 60 by 2013, having been replaced by over 300 thin clients during the intervening years. There are plans to further increase the numbers of thin clients going forward.

“Citrix technology has made it possible for University employees to do their job, on any device, anywhere. We have effectively transformed the workplace via desktop virtualization technology, whilst significantly reducing costs and empowering our employees to embrace a much more mobile way of working,” explained Joseph Aninias, Manager, Information Technology, “BYOD is now enabled for any staff or student user that requires it. This is true mobility,” he added.

Key benefits of the project include:
Secure enterprise mobility – giving employees the opportunity to work securely wherever, whenever, on any device – such as a tablet, smartphone or a personal laptop
Centralised data and applications – letting employees get fast and easy access to the data and applications they need to do their job effectively
Effective business continuity – with data held in centralised datacentres, employees can continue to work wherever they may be
Significant cost savings – by creating a centralised service, duplicated IT costs such as manually updating PCs with new software has been removed – and the life of hardware has been extended.

Johnny Karam, Regional Vice President, MEA, Citrix said: “The University of Wollongong In Dubai’s decision to transform its workplace environment will invariably have a positive impact on employees. By providing the technology to adopt a more mobile way of working, employee productivity and satisfaction will increase, whilst the University will reap the rewards of a more flexible, secure and cost effective IT operation.”

The University of Wollongong in Dubai (UOWD) is one of the UAE’s oldest and most prestigious universities. Established in 1993 by the University of Wollongong in Australia, UOWD represents a pioneering Australian initiative in the Gulf region.

As a result of the 2008 global financial crisis, UOWD’s 2009 IT capital budget was significantly cut. It was necessary to deploy a solution that would both extend the life of the then existing PCs within the reduced budget, whilst ensuring user productivity was not impacted. Citrix XenDesktop made it possible to transform the workplace, at a significantly reduced cost.
