: Wednesday, February 26 - 2014 @ 16:43

The first Arab States Regional South-South Development Expo 2014 was held in Qatar with a high-level delegation representing the UAE. As United Nations (UN) system-wide high-profile event for South-South cooperation, it strategically and systematically showcased development solutions originating from Southern countries from February 18th – 20th.

With the motto “Solutions to Action”, the Expo was designed to raise regional awareness on solutions that have been crafted and tested by countries in the Arab States region and have proven to be successful in a similar social and economic environment. Usually this discourse is steered by countries from the Northern hemisphere where conditions differ greatly form the reality in the South.

By providing access to knowledge on successful projects first hand, the organizing UN entity hoped to scale up the impact of successful evidence-based solutions. The three thematic focus areas of the Expo were youth and women’s employment, energy efficiency and renewable energy, and water and food security.

HE Waleed Salman, Chairman of the Dubai Carbon Centre of Excellence (Dubai Carbon), pointed out that “The UAE in general and Dubai in particular, have taken large leaps towards the realization of green economy and implementation of energy efficiency in 2013. With a focus on energy diversification and demand side management, the Supreme Council of Energy has created a winning formula for the transition to a low carbon economy.”

Dubai provided key insights and strategic inputs based on its experience in successfully developing and implementing climate change initiatives, especially in greenhouse gas reduction initiatives as well as developing economically sustainable green projects in the UAE as well as throughout the Gulf region.

These have been made available to the public and peer countries previously in the first of its kind “State of Energy Report: Dubai 2014’, released in October 2013. The report was developed in cooperation with the United Nations Development Programme (UNDP) and has served as a written summary on developments in the area of energy efficiency, renewable energy, green buildings and transport and mobility. The next edition will cover the entire UAE and is currently under development.

The EXPO is of high strategic importance in the realization of the vision of His Highness Sheikh Mohammed Bin Rashid Al Maktoum, Vice President and Prime Minister of UAE and Ruler of Dubai for ‘Green Economy for Sustainable Development’.
