Electricity consumption increases 149.5% in seven years, reveals NCSI

The National Center for Statistics and Information (NCSI) The National Center for Statistics and Information NCSI, revealed a study of Electricity consumption in the Sultanate during the period (2005-2012). The study coincides with “Earth Hour” which is celebrated annually on the last Saturday of March. The statistics demonstrated a dramatic 149.5%increase in electricity consumption over the statistical period, with energy usage jumping from 8,402.0 (GW/H) in 2005 to 20,958.2 (GW/H) in 2012.

Breaking down the power usage numbers between 2005 and 2012, the consumption of electricity power has risen steadily over the seven year study period, with total consumption in 2009 standing at 14,483.0 (GW/H), rising to 16,133.0 (GW/H) in 2010, 18,512.0 (GW/H) in 2011, and reaching 20,958.2 (GW/H) in 2012.

Regarding the residential consumption of electricity, the energy usage went from 4,759.0 (GW/H) in 2005 to 10,039.0 (GW/H) in 2012, representing an increase of 110.9%. In 2009 the total consumption was 7,918.0 (GW/H), 8,397.0 (GW/H) in 2010 increasing to 9,060.0 (GW/H) in 2011. During the same period, the commercial consumption of electricity also rose by 191% from 1,417.0 (GW/H) in 2005 to 4,124.0 (GW/H). The consumption in 2009 was 2,870.0 (GW/H) increasing to 3,440.0 (GW/H) in 2010 to 3,784.0 (GW/H) in 2011.

According to the NCSI figures, the industrial consumption of electricity rose from 463.0 (GW/H) in 2005 to 3,436.0 (GW/H) in 2012, an increase of 642%, which underlines the rapidly expanding industrial base in the Sultanate. During the study period, the consumption in 2009 was 1,175.0 (GW/H), 1,541.0 (GW/H) in 2010, and 2,583.0 (GW/H) in 2011.

Meanwhile, the government consumption of electricity the percentage increased by 76%, as the total consumption in 2005 was 1,594.0 (GW/H) rising to 2804.0 (GW/H) in 2012. The consumption in 2009 was 2,095.0 (GW/H), while in 2010 it was 2,287.0 (GW/H), reaching 2,596.0 (GW/H) in 2011.

Consumption of electricity for other categories rose by 228%, from 169.0 in 2005 to 555.0 (GW/H) in 2012. During the study period, the consumption was 424.0 (GW/H) in 2009, 468.0 (GW/H) in 2010, and 489.0 (GW/H) in 2011.
