29 May 2014 Students from Al Ruwais Colleges and Abu Dhabi Men’s College were commended for their achievements in placing third and fourth in Diesel Prototype category at the Shell Eco-marathon global competition held in Manila, Philippines earlier this year, during a recognition ceremony at the Higher Colleges Of Technology Abu Dhabi Men’s College in Abu Dhabi.
The event was attended by Dr. Tayeb Kamali, Vice Chancellor Higher Colleges of Technology (HCT), Andrew Vaughan, Shell Vice President for Abu Dhabi and Kuwait along with other distinguished guests.
The Shell Eco-marathon, is a global event that encourages innovation in fuel efficiency and smarter mobility, and provided students in the UAE with a platform through which they can apply their engineering skills to develop award winning “Made in the UAE” vehicle prototypes to compete against 150 other teams from across the Middle East and Asia.
Speaking at the event, Andrew Vaughan, said, “Today we come together to celebrate these two teams who secured their winning places with their ‘Made in the UAE’ cars at the 2014 Shell Eco-marathon competition in Manila. These exceptional teams came in third and fourth, competing against over 100 teams from across Asia and the Middle East. These young Emirati students embody the UAE vision 2030’s priority to build a sustainable economy and are going a long way towards realizing it with their award winning fuel-efficient cars. They truly are role models and we congratulate them on their achievements.”
Dr. Tayeb Kamali said, “The Shell Eco-marathon campaign has provided our students with the opportunity to build fuel-efficient cars right here in the UAE, which will be essential in helping our nation to develop a sustainable economy, whilst also giving them the practical, applied skills and knowledge that are embedded in all of HCT’s programmes, as part of our Learning by Doing philosophy.” “We would like to thank Shell for its efforts in bringing this challenge to the region and for its continued support of our students. We look forward to HCT’s increasing participation in this international team competition, where they will represent the UAE with great distinction,” he added.
Both teams are well on their way to developing concepts for the 2015 Shell Eco-Marathon event and will be joined by other universities from across the UAE and region.
