Employees from Maersk Oil Qatar are limbering up to promote the benefits of a healthy lifestyle on National Sports Day, with a range of activities planned at Aspire Zone in conjunction with one of its ‘Action on Diabetes’ partners the Qatar Diabetes Association – member of Qatar Foundation. Five a side football, volleyball, basketball and aerobics are just some of the sports planned by the country’s largest offshore oil producer.
Maersk Oil Qatar Deputy Managing Director, Sheikh Faisal bin Fahad Al-Thani, expects a large turnout of employees and their families. He said: ‘Maersk Oil has a history of successful National Sports Day events at Aspire and I expect this year to be no different. We initiated and support the ‘Action on Diabetes’ partnership to help reduce, over time, the prevalence rates of diabetes in Qatar. Participating in sport and taking regular exercise is a key contributor to combating Type 2 diabetes, which makes National Sports Day extra special for our company.
‘I’d like to recognise the bold vision of His Highness the Emir, Sheikh Tamim bin Hamad bin Khalifa Al-Thani for his continued support of this important national sports day and thank Aspire Zone, on behalf of everyone at Maersk Oil Qatar, for allowing us and the Action on Diabetes partnership to their venue for a third year running,’ he added.
Employees working on Maersk Oil Qatar’s 9 offshore platform locations will also be participating in activities, while being mindful of safety regulations. An inter-platform running competition, conducted in gymnasiums offshore will pit teams against each other to see which platform can clock up the most miles during sports day.
Khalid Abdullah al Sulaiteen, CEO of Aspire Zone Foundation, said, “Dedicating a day to celebrate sports is a wise and visionary move by the leadership of Qatar. It reflects faith in sports to build and sustain a healthy society. This day also presents us with an opportunity to communicate and interact with residents in order to encourage them to join our regular programs that promote a healthy lifestyle. Our main priority is to spread awareness about the benefits of healthy living and to provide all residents in Qatar with the tools they need to adopt a healthy lifestyle.”
Staff and family members from Qatar Diabetes Association will also be joining the event at the Aspire Zone which runs from 8am till 1pm and is open to the general public. The Action on Diabetes Screening bus will be present as part of a wider testing programme at workplaces around Qatar.

The National Sports Day event at Aspire will be held under the umbrella of Action on Diabetes, a public private partnership programme designed to help deliver the vision of a healthy Qatar. The initiative is a partnership between Maersk Oil Qatar, the Supreme Council of Health, Hamad Medical Corporation, Qatar Diabetes Association – part of Qatar Foundation, the Primary Health Care Corporation, and Novo Nordisk, the world’s leading provider of diabetes care.
