IQPC will be organising the MENA Offshore Platforms 2014 from 23-25 February at the Beach Rotana Hotel in Abu Dhabi. The conference will look at requirements, design, engineering and construction, operation and maintenance, risk and safety associated with the various types for offshore platforms for the region. With unique challenges of each of these fields (deep water, sour gas, heavy oil, etc) this event will look at the best platform to support the requirements of the field, and the engineering and technological requirements to establish and operate.
Ibrahim Fahmy, Marine Specialist from ZADCO will be chairing this event. He is currently working with ZADCO Project Management Team for Satah Full Field Development Project, STFFD. He participated and chaired many HIRA sessions and HSEMS audits for most of the EPIC/Marine Contractors in UAE and has inspected most of marine fleet currently working in Brownfield Projects at the UAE offshore industry.
The main geotechnical challenges in design and quality control of artificial islands remains a top priority for many operators in the region. COWI’s Project Director, Dr. Abdulaziz Rebaei and Geo-Technical Section Head Dr. Hossam Eldin Al Ali will be addressing this important topic. There will also be a separate panel discussion on the impact of offshore E&P on other industries in the region. Captain Zarir Irani from Constellation Marine Services will be addressing an important topic about the practical risks of rig moving at this prestigious event. Captain Zarir added, “My presentation will be a rig master’s perspective of risks associated with rig moving. I will be covering certain aspects related to warranties and the pro-active measures of industrial intelligence. The event will be a wonderful opportunity to meet and network with industry peers in this growing offshore industry.”
Asset performance management along with other aspects of inspection and corrosion management are extremely critical in the offshore industry. Risk based inspection for enhancing integrity of fixed steel, offshore, subsea and other top-side structures which has been greatly implemented in Saudi Arabia will be showcased exclusively by Mohammed Attia, Sr. Asset Integrity Management Engineer from Saudi Aramco. Rehan Ahmed, Chairman of Qatar’s Society for Protective Coatings will be educating the attendees on challenges facing offshore structures and risers due to splash zone corrosion. Archer UK Ltd’s Vice President, Rob Egan, will be sharing some of the best practices of Asset Performance Management (APM) for offshore platforms. This topic promises to be of great interest to the attendees especially if anybody is looking at a comprehensive APM plan for their offshore platforms.
Decommissioning of offshore platforms and technical challenges concerning the subsea infrastructure are very critical for sustaining the growth in the offshore industry. Qatar Petroleum’s Akachidike Kanu from the Offshore Oil & Gas Development – Ventures Group dept will be speaking extensively on overcoming technical challenges of subsea infrastructure whereas ADMA-OPCO’s Haitham Mokhtar will educate the audience on decommissioning of offshore platforms. Making offshore platforms greener will the theme of the talk to be presented by M.P. Singh, Former Executive Director of Drydocks. Considering sustainability in this industry, increasing utilisation is of primary importance. However it is observed that there are a lot of constraints while increasing utilisation especially the “floatover method”.
Petrofac’s Subject Matter Expert for Naval Architecture, Mohamed Aboumalwa added, “My presentation on floatover method will help the audience understanding how to overcome constraints of floatover operation and increase its utilisation in the offshore market. Also, a case study will be presented illustrating saving in CAPEX and OPEX when investing in appropriate floatover asset rather than medium size derrick barges. The event organised by IQPC will help in sharing knowledge with colleagues across different companies.”
Safety and risk management are vital in the offshore industry. Managing foundation risks for mobile jack-up units with site specific evaluations for penetration and stability will be covered by Dr. David Cathie from Cathie Associates. Safety of artificial islands and ensuring a high safety level in offshore platforms specifically will be addressed by Paul Baggermans from VAN DAM B.V., Netherlands. This session will be a great opportunity for local engineers to learn from Europe’s best practices. Outlining the precedence for further efforts to improve offshore safety will extensively discussed in a panel by Captain Terence Robinson from Crawford GTS and Mohamed Bensahraoui, HSE Advisor from ADMA-OPCO.
The event will also feature an exclusive pre-event workshop on February 23, hosted by ABB and Ventyx, an ABB company. Entitled “Ensuring Safe and Reliable Production”, the workshop will explore strategies and approaches for managing process risk of complex offshore operations. Interactive, practice-oriented discussions will explore how companies can optimise facility safety while simultaneously enhancing operational productivity.
“Oil and gas companies are facing tremendous pressure to meet operational targets, avoid business interruption and improve their process safety performance while reducing the risks associated with operating complex offshore facilities,” said Steve Elliott, Industry Solutions Expert – Process Safety at Ventyx, an ABB Company. “The need for a proven path to process safety excellence has never been greater, especially as organizations take on new challenges, such as meeting regulatory pressures, operating aging assets and drilling in harsher environments. Together, ABB and Ventyx possess extensive experience helping asset-intensive companies solve these challenges, and we are keen to share this useful insight with the Middle East offshore community for the first time,” he added.
