As part of their ongoing community engagement programmes, Oman Oil Company Exploration and Production LLC (OOCEP) and Sohar Aluminium, two of Oman Oil Company (OOC) subsidiaries and affiliates, partnered and signed with the Department of Agriculture and Fisheries in the Governorate of Musandam, a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) to develop the poultry sector with rural women. This Corporate Social Responsibility (CSR) initiative is shared by OOC and its group of companies to expand and sustain rural development with an emphasis on agriculture in Oman.
Said Al Jabri, CSR Superintendent of Sohar Aluminium said, “We are passionate about investing in our communities to support a brighter future. We acknowledge the key role played by rural women in improving standard of living in their communities, thus, we provide them with a set of skills that will generate income and a sense of pride in contributing to the national economy. Through investing in poultry farming projects, we are creating entrepreneurs for poultry development to achieve economic sustainability.”
Said Al Badai, Government Relation Advisor to OOCEP commented, “We believe in introducing initiatives that benefit individuals, families and the society as a whole with long lasting tangible effects. The project is initially for two years but the positive impact will last for many years to come as we offer new channels for developing small and medium scale poultry production. Our collaboration with Sohar Aluminium as a group offers added value by following clearly-stated goals that members of the Musdandam community can relate to in their day-to-day lives.”
The project is going through a number of phases and the first phase will be implemented in 2014. The poultry development plans will focus on low-income women in the rural areas of Bukha, Lima, Khasab and Dibba with priority given to those who already have the basics of a chicken farm. Modern equipment and extensive training will be provided on how to use new technology and methods that increase efficiency and quality. Future strategies to underpin the poultry development project will include marketing the products to local shops and restaurants, targeting larger chain stores and eventually expand the reach of Musandam poultry products to other Governorates of the Sultanate.
OOC and its group of companies is a responsible corporate citizen committed to developing and maintaining strong and mutually beneficial relationships with its community. CSR programmes focus on three main areas including building capacity, training for employment and supporting entrepreneurship. The Group allocates up to 3% of net profits to foster social and business partnerships that creates new opportunities for engagement and growth.
