Qatargas and the Qatar Diabetes Association (QDA)- a member of Qatar Foundation – jointly hosted a ‘Diabetes Awareness Day’ at the Qatargas Winter Camp in the Sealine area on 8th March.
More than 200 people – diabetic patients and their families, including Qatargas employees participated in the event. A mobile diabetic unit of the QDA was available on site and blood sugar tests were carried out. QDA delivered awareness sessions on diabetes. The sessions provided important information regarding the management and control of diabetes and valuable advice to help the patients live an active, healthy and normal life, and at the same time reduce the risk of developing long term complications. Several queries from the participants were answered during the question and answer session following the presentation.
The event provided educational and medical information in an entertaining, safe way to all the participants.There were also animated films about diabetes for children as well as plenty of fun and games including bouncy castles and other activities.The participants benefited greatly from the awareness sessions and enjoyed the facilities at the Qatargas Winter Camp.
Dr. Abdulla Al-Hamaq, Executive Director, Qatar Diabetes Association, said: “We are very pleased to have this joint event with Qatargas, because it reflects our belief that education is everybody’s right.And at this event, we had a variety of educational activities aimed at reaching people with diabetes and those who are at risk, and providing them with information about diabetes, how to control it and how to prevent it.”
“A sedentary life style puts us in danger of obesity and diabetes, and therefore my message is that we need to work towards decreasing the main factors of diabetes type 2, and that can be done by following a healthy lifestyle which include regular exercise, healthy food and losing weight to protect ourselves and our future from having diabetes,” added Dr. Al Hamaq.
The Qatar Diabetes Association (QDA) is a member of Qatar Foundation for Education, Science and Community Development (QF). QDA provides useful and up to date information, Health education and diet and various programs throughout the year to various segments of society that will help patients understand the reality of diabetes, ways of living with it and abidance with proper care.
Diabetes is a common chronic disease all over the world affecting all segments of society including children, women, youth and adults. It is currently one of the world’s biggest killers with over 382 m people with diabetes. The total number of diabetics in the world is expected to exceed 592 m by 2030 (International Diabetes Federation Statistics Figure). Every 6 seconds, a person dies of diabetes. In the Middle East and North Africa, 1 in 10 adults has diabetes.
Health-related initiatives form an integral part of Qatargas’ corporate social responsibility programme. Qatargas believes that supporting such events contribute to building a healthy population, which is a key objective of the Human Development pillar of Qatar’s National Vision 2030. Qatargas looks forward to continuing its ongoing collabortion with the Qatar Diabetes Association and supporting their efforts in raising awareness about healthy lifestyles, management and prevention of diabetes.
