Qatargas is participating in the QP Environment Fair 2014 (QPEF 2014), being held at the Qatar National Convention Centre (QNCC) from 23 – 26 April, 2014.
This year’s Fair being held under the theme “Use of Water in the Oil and Gas Industry”, is the 8th edition of the event which was launched in 2004 with the objective of promoting environmental awareness among students, the employees of Qatar Petroleum and its joint ventures and subsidiaries, and the general public.
The Fair will highlight the importance of water within the oil and gas industry, and this environmental message will be delivered in various ways using diverse programs.
Qatargas has a themed stand at the Fair focusing on the Company’s initiatives to reduce the consumption of water and increase its re-use. Water is used for various plant processes in Qatargas with its primary use being in generatings team which in turn is used for running the turbines. By 2016-2017, the total daily water requirement in Qatargas is expected to reach around 7500 cubic metres.
Qatargas is demonstrating its advanced wastewater management plans which seek to achieve sustainable wastewater reuse by utilizing biological-membrane bio-reactor (MBR) and tertiary reverse osmosis (RO) technologies. The MBR cleans the water through a filtration and biological process. Reverse osmosis produces desalinated water for reuse.
The use of these technologies will save approximately 5000 cubic metres of water per day, which is equivalent to the daily water needs of around 20,000 people. An overall reduction of 60-70% in water requirement (and consequently wastewater generated) will be achieved as a result.
The wastewater management programme is one of many initiatives in Qatargas that demonstrates the Company’s commitment towards maintaining the highest environmental standards.
As in previous years, the Fair is open to the public and is more of a community activity rather than a corporate initiative. The Qatargas stand also has activities and information for families and children.
An interactive game at the stand provides visitors with useful tips on saving water at home – e.g. turning off the water while brushing teeth, using washing machines and dishwashers only with full loads, washing cars and bikes using a bucket etc. A colouring zone, also themed around water conservation, has been set up for children.
Additionally an informative unit illustrates how much water is needed to produce some of the common food items we consume – surprising facts about the water footprint of every day food items.
Qatargas is also presenting a paper at the Fair titled “Wastewater Treatment at Qatargas; Reduce, Recycle and Reuse” highlighting the various projects aimed towards water conservation.
As part of its ongoing efforts to highlight the need for conserving water, Qatargas recently ran a month-long in-house campaign aimed at promoting awareness amongst its employees regarding the importance of the responsible use of this scarce and precious resource.
