The keynote speakers to appear at this year’s OPITO Safety and Competence Conference – OSCC 2014 have been announced.
Army officer and commentator on conflicts – Bob Stewart, inspirational mountaineer – Karen Darke and globally recognised motivational speaker – Peter Cohen are set to appear at the annual event. The only global event focused on safety and competency in the oil and gas industry, OSCC 2014 will take place on 4 November 2014 in the Fairmont Hotel, Abu Dhabi.
The conference, which is taking place for the fifth time, will have the theme of ‘Leading from the front-line’ and will explore the dynamic of effective leadership and change management on human behaviours in relation to safety.
David Doig, group chief executive for OPITO said: “All three of our speakers have inspirational stories to tell and through their varied experiences can talk authoritatively on our themes of leadership and change management, providing different perspective for our oil and gas delegates. As with previous events, we know there is a lot to be gained and applied from sharing experiences with those from outwith our sector.
“This platform provides a unique opportunity to hear from safety leaders from other industries, learn about new thinking, find out more about global standards and new training practices and network with industry decision-makers who are committed to making the oil and gas sector safer for every employee, anywhere in the world.”
Mr Stewart, known to many as ‘Bosnia Bob’, became a familiar face to television viewers as he handled the intricacies of Balkan politics during the conflict in the early 1990s. He crossed borders, negotiated and manoeuvred to keep the peace and deliver aid. Mr Stewart served as an intelligence officer and company commander for the British Army in Northern Ireland. He gained the personal commendation of the GOC Northern Ireland for his actions following the Ballykelly bombing.
With a First Class degree in International Politics and Strategy, he became the first British United Nations Commander in Bosnia in 1991. He then became Chief of Policy at Supreme Headquarters Allied Powers Europe before leaving the Army and joining Hill & Knowlton’s Political Affairs and Corporate Policy Division. He is now a news and current affairs broadcaster.
A keen runner and mountaineer Ms Darke was left paralysed aged 21 after a rock-climbing accident. Over the past decade, Ms Darke has overcome physical and mental barriers to complete marathons and triathlons and has kayaked, sit-skied and hand cycled in some of the planet’s most inhospitable regions. Her adventures have been documented in her best-selling book ‘If You Fall’.
An expert in personal development, Pete Cohen is a talented motivational speaker, business consultant, life strategist and bestselling author. Over 400 delegates and 25 exhibitors are expected at OSCC 2014 where leaders from the oil and gas supply chain and world-renowned experts in change management will participate in keynote session and panel debate on how leadership can implement long-term high value change and ultimately a safer workforce.

International training standards body, OPITO, devised the event as part of its drive for common global standards across the oil and gas industry to improve safety and competence.
