The highlight of Friday’s displays was the Middle East debut of the breath-taking Aero GP race series, widely regarded as aviation’s answer to Formula One.
Five of the world’s best took to the skies to battle it out across three disciplines – pylon racing (with five aircraft competing in the air at the same time), a one-on-one dogfight and a precision targeting ‘barnstorming’ challenge – for bragging rights as the world’s elite.
“Pylon racing has never been seen before in the Middle East and spectators at Al Ain rallied to see this discipline in action. There is a great buzz surrounding the Aero GP and all the other daring displays, a fact illustrated by the packed stands today,”
said Faisal Al Sheikh, Head of Events Section, Abu Dhabi Tourism Authority (ADTA), which organises the four day show with the UAE Air Force.
The Al Ain Aerobatic Show’s line-up, which includes teams from 21 countries, has certainly lived up to its billing, with a world record already being broken by UK’s Swift Glider Team for most turns on a tow.
And it’s not just about looping the loop and aerial amazement. The Al Ain Aerobatic Show, which concludes tomorrow (Saturday), also has a host of family-friendly displays on the ground. These include an expanded Heritage Village showcasing Emirati traditions including dance, falconry and basket weaving.
In addition, for those wanting to try their hand at flying without leaving the ground, a state of the art simulator is on-hand.
Daily tickets for the show are Dhs40 per adult and Dhs25 for children between three and 10 years, children under three enter free. They are available via www.timeoutabudhabi.com or the Toll Free hotline 800 555.
The Al Ain Aerobatic Show 2009 has a high-profile sponsorship line-up including Pilatus, Abu Dhabi National Hotels, Etihad Airways and Al Ain Mineral Water as Gold sponsors; Abu Dhabi Aircraft Technologies and Tourism Development & Investment Company as Silver sponsors and Emirates Motor Company as the official vehicle sponsor.
