The biggest IT and Technology show in the region COMEX 2014 has been well received by the public in its second day 8th April, 2014. As many as hundreds of IT experts, tech savvies, enthusiasts, school students and individuals have toured the exhibition and captured by new solutions offered in both government and corporate pavilions, the event has yet more to offer.
Under the theme “Mobility”, the 5th COMEX Conference is opened today under the patronage of Dr. Saud Bin Salim Al Balushi, Undersecretary of Ministry of Education for Educational Planning and Human Resources Development, at Golden Tulip Hotel, Seeb. The two days conference focuses on real time communication applications and services available for the businesses to transform employee engagement and productivity through Mobility. Experts from different areas and big companies, such as Nawras, Cisco, and Avaya, engage in positive discussions towards Oman’s ICT development.
Omar Salim Al Shanfari, Deputy CEO for Operations, in his opening speech at the conference emphasized the importance of mobile applications in the eGovernment transformation in the Sultanate. Al Shanfari commented on ITA’s efforts in this field, saying: “The ITA has worked on several projects in this field and Sas Programme for Entrepreneurship is incubating around 13 companies currently, 4 of which are specialized in mobile applications. Yesterday the ITA also launched another center Sas for Virtual Reality which will be working on projects in reality simulation through Mobile Apps and other projects in this field.”
The conference addresses various issues, trends and challenges on Mobility with an aim for future strategic deployment of ICT technologies for the Sultanate of Oman. A keynote presentation was delivered by Mr. Biswajeet Mahapatra, Research Director at Gartner, on an overview of Mobility in the world, followed by the Chairperson remarks delivered by Dr. Zahra Al Rawahi, Director of Research- Communication and Information Technology at the Research Council.
The first session addressed Mobility for Enterprises- Strategic Challenges and Solutions, through four presentations delivered by speakers from big companies in mobile broadband technology. Mr. Greg Young, CEO of Nawras, talked about Nawras efforts in providing the network in the Sultanate. He displayed some figures and statistics about the Nawras users in the Sultanate. In the second presentation, Mr. Ali Cheema, Manager Strategic Marketing and Government & Industry Relations at Ericson, asked the question what is sufficient Mobile Broadband? He talked on how mobile broadband is overwhelming people’s lives. Speaking on some huge results found in this area, Mr. Ali said: “The changes in the world in terms of mobile broadband determine how we will live our lives in the future. Statistics show that 6.7 billion Mobile subscriptions were in Q4 in 2013 in the world and videos takes the huge percentage in what is the most used feature in the mobile. 50% of people interviewed are satisfied with the Mobile Broadband and 47% said that Mobile Broadband didn’t meet their expectations. We need to know the users’ usage prospective and since a huge number of the users use the network to download videos, the network coverage and speed is the unsatisfactory factor for them.”
The second session discussed business transformation through Mobility solutions in which two presentations delivered, after which the conference first day kicked off.

On the other hand, one of the show attractions is the human robot show and the dancing robots that perform a number of activities. Throughout every day at COMEX2014, there are around 7 daily robot shows for 30 – 40 minutes each. Visitors may enjoy taking photographs with the robots and even participate by uploading the photos on the e.oman Instagram account and be part of the draw for various selections of giveaways.
