The Unveiling of its new smart-phone app, together with a showcase of the latest technology in the field of statistics, the National Center for Statistics and Information (NCSI) received a large turnout of visitors at its pavilion at COMEX 2014.

NCSI’s brand new GIS smartphone application was launched by H.E. Dr. Yahya bin Mahfoodh Al-Mandhary, Chairman of the State Council, at the COMEX 2014 grounds in the Muscat International Exhibition Centre. The App attracted large numbers of visitors who were keen to know more about the application and how it works. NCSI representative at the exhibition guided them through the app, demonstrating the ease with which the information required could be obtained. In addition, visitors were also provided with an in-depth look at each of NCSI’s other smartphone applications and programs.

For a better understanding of what visitors thought about the new GIS App, we conducted a number of short interviews.
Mustafa Ali Mahmood Al-Humaid said: “Such an App will be an invaluable tool for researchers, academics and other such professions who require official statistics and information. Because of the speed and ease with which this App provides accurate, official and reliable data on social and economy statistics, it can also be extremely beneficial to decision makers and business heads.”

“For me, as an academic researcher, I find this App interesting and I am sure that I will benefit from it once I have it download on my phone. With it, access to the information I require will be much easier to obtain regardless of time or place.” Al-Humaid added.

Fahad bin Yahya Al-Raisi, who also visited the NCSI corner said, “The App is excellent and will no doubt be an important tool to both, specialists and the general population. It provides important indicators on population, divided according to nationalities in different Wilayats and communities, in addition to a number of other services.”

When asked about what he thought was the most important feature of the App, Al-Raisi added, “I think that the inquiry service is by far the most important. It allows the user to find out general statistics on specific geographic areas of the map. The explanation on the App showed how easy it was to use and it took me just a few minutes to properly understand how it works.”
