The Friends of Cancer Patients society recently received a financial donation of Dhs158,000 from the Islamic Affairs and Charitable Activities Department (IACAD) – during IACAD’s participation in the Dubai International Humanitarian Aid and Development Conference (DIHAD) 2014 – to help support various cancer-related projects; such as early detection, treatment, and awareness campaigns for different types of cancers.

The Friends of Cancer Patients Society (FoCP) has praised the tremendous efforts being made by the Islamic Affairs and Charitable Activities Department (IACAD) in Dubai in support of various health-related and humanitarian activities.

IACAD’s commitment to humanitarian initiatives underscores the importance of mutual cooperation in supporting community development initiatives, and the significance of establishing strong institutional integration between the various government agencies and public welfare associations.

Dr Sawsan Al Madhi, Secretary General of the Friends of Cancer Patients Society, accepted the donation from Dr. Hamad Al Shaibani, Director General of IACAD, in the presence of Ibrahim Abu Malhah, Cultural Advisor to His Highness Sheikh Mohammed bin Rashid Al Maktoum, UAE’s Vice President, Prime Minister and Ruler of Dubai, and Ali Al Mansouri, Head of Charitable Institutions Department.

Speaking on the occasion, Dr Al Madhi, said, “The Society was established in 1999 under the guidance of Her Highness Sheikha Jawaher Bint Mohammed Al Qasimi, Wife of the Ruler of Sharjah, Founder and Royal Patron of the Friends of Cancer Patients Society (FoCP), International Ambassador of the World Cancer Declaration for Union for International Cancer Control (UICC) and International Ambassador for Childhood Cancer for UICC. Since inception, our goal has been to provide support for cancer patients and their families, and to raise awareness about cancer throughout the 7 Emirates of the UAE. There is no doubt that the generous support and active involvement of government bodies, such as the IACAD, will reinforce our role, leading to the provision of greater, distinguished services.”

Dr Hamad Al Shaibani, Director General of IACAD, said, “The love of philanthropy has been rooted in the hearts of the people of the UAE since ancient times, and the nation’s generosity has touched most regions of the world. We extend our support to the Friends of Cancer Patients Society not only to emphasize the importance of concerted efforts to ensure the success of programmes dedicated to the provision of medical support and awareness for patients and their families, but also as a continuation of the approach of our leaders, and our people, in supporting charitable work and contributing to its success in every possible way.”

Cooperation between the FoCP and IACAD was cemented almost four years ago. Since then, the Department has supported over 30 events held by the Society to collect donations for cancer patients living in Dubai, with a total value exceeding Dhs3m.

The Friends of Cancer Patients Society, which was founded in 1999, has launched a number of initiatives for the early diagnosis of various types of cancer, including breast, cervical, skin, and prostate cancer, among others. It also launched the Pink Caravan initiative in 2011, the first early breast cancer detection initiative in the UAE covering all the seven emirates. Since its launch, Pink Caravan has provided free screenings to 28, 091 women and men, and has created awareness in schools, hospitals, and major shopping centres around the UAE. The campaign enjoys strong support from all state sectors, as well as schools, universities, institutions, and ambassadors of the Pink Caravan initiative.
