Italian Lifestyle opens at Expo Centre Sharjah

United Arab Emirates: Tuesday, May 23 - 2006 @ 16:11

The opening ceremony was attended by Mr. Mohammed Sultan Bin Huwaidin, First Vice Chairman, Sharjah Chamber of Commerce and Industry (SCCI), Mr. Mohammed Salem Al Mosharrekh – Expo Centre Sharjah Board Member, Mr. Saif Al Midfa – Director General of Expo Centre Sharjah, Mr. Giorgio Natalino Guerrini, President of CONFARTIGIANATO directors of various government departments, and members of the diplomatic corps and trade associations.

The four-day event is displaying an array of high quality Italian products, services, and technologies. The primary focus of the exhibition this year is on the region’s building, construction, and contracting sectors.

Among the products that are being showcased at the exhibition are building material, accessories, furniture, home furnishings, home accessories, bathroom fittings, sanitary ware, kitchen fittings and equipment, windows and doors, flooring material, ceramic products and accessories, wooden products, metallic and compound materials, and lighting equipment.

“The Italian building materials industry, especially the cement, ceramics, bricks, glass and the woodworking segments, is making major inroads in to the global construction sector due to its superior quality,” said Mr. Saif Al Midfa, Director General of Expo Centre Sharjah.

“The Italian Lifestyle in the Emirates exhibition is aimed at providing the Middle East construction and other industries with a sourcing platform for high quality Italian products and services. In fact, this event is an ideal opportunity for the region’s construction sector to experience Italian excellence and aesthetics first hand,” he added.

The Italian Lifestyle in the Emirates Exhibition this year features 200 leading Italian companies and service providers occupying two halls at Expo Centre Sharjah measuring 8,000 sq. m.

The Italian Trade Commission pavilion at the Italian Lifestyle in the Emirates exhibition consists of 80 Italian companies occupying total exhibition area of 1,314 sq. m.

Though the primary focus of the current edition of the Italian Lifestyle in the Emirates Exhibition is on construction related products, services and technologies, a limited number of Italian food companies are also participating in it. Italian food is considered to be one of the richest and most varied in the world.

“Besides being the Middle East’s largest and only sourcing platform for quality Italian produts and services, the Italian Lifestyle in the Emirates Exhibition provides ample networking opportunities for regional companies wanting to enter in to strategic alliances with companies from Italy,” said Mr. Saif Al Midfa.

“Given the focused exhibit profile of the current edition of the show, we expect a 15% increase in visitor turnout this year over 2005,” he added.

The last edition of the Italian Lifestyle in the Emirates Exhibition attracted 12,160 visitors, of which 11,660 visitors were from the GCC States including the UAE.

Trade between Italy and the GCC region including the UAE is currently experiencing significant growth.

In 2005, trade between Italy and the GCC States increased by approximately 24% over the previous year. During the year, the GCC States and Italy witnessed total trade amounting to 10.3 billion euros compared to 8.29 billion euros in 2004.

GCC’s exports to Italy during 2005 reached 4.7 billion euros up from 3.33 billion euros the previous year, translating in to a 42 % increase. Total imports in 2005, on the other hand, increased by 14% to 5.66 billion euros on a year-on-year basis.

In 2005, Italy’s exports to the UAE were 2.5 billion euros, up from 2.1 billion euros the previous year. Its imports from the UAE, on the other hand, rose to 264 million euros from 251.4 million euros in 2004.

A major attraction of the Italian Lifestyle in the Emirates Exhibition will be the display of mosaic tile making, Tromp L’oeil, antique paper processing, and glass painting by artisans from across Florence and Turin provinces on the sidelines.

The Italian Lifestyle in the Emirates Exhibition is being jointly organised by the Italian Trade Commission in Dubai, Artex, the Italian Chamber of Commerce in the UAE and GCC, and Expo Centre Sharjah with the support of the Sharjah Chamber of Commerce and Industry (SCCI).
