“Pregnancy puts additional demands on the mother and child, the risks are especially high when attempting to fast during the first months of pregnancy and can lead to hypoglycaemia, ketosis and dehydration. While every pregnancy case is different, women doing well in terms of complexities may be allowed to fast as long as they hydrate and even then they must fast only if they feel able and must discontinue it if they feel they are harming the baby. In any case pregnant women wanting to observe Ramadan must seek medical consultation before attempting to fast,” said Dr. Madhuri Duryodhan Dhorey, Senior Specialist IVF & Laparoscopic Surgeon, Al Hakeem Fertility Mother and Childcare Centre.

“Most often in following Islamic customs during Ramadan, children over the age of 10 fast from dawn to dusk. Apart from headaches and a little weakness, children appear to be resilient; however complications could occur with the use of medications which is why it is important to consult a specialist to assist you in administration of medication for children that coincides with the time they are allowed to eat. A general checkup of your child during this time is advised to ensure active health and wellbeing,” said Dr. Nadhim Sabry, Paediatric Specialist, Al Hakeem Fertility Mother and Childcare Centre.
