Arab Hygiene Council warns about publicly proclaimed misconception about hand washing habits

: Wednesday, July 09 - 2014 @ 11:43

Arab Hygiene Council (AHC) has recently identified a series of publicly proclaimed misconceptions about hand washing habits that put the health of population in United Arab Emirates at risk.

As a medical body of leading experts from around the Middle East who recognise and promote the fact that improved hygiene practices lead to better health, AHC is committed to raising awareness about the safe hand hygiene and identifying misconceptions to ensure population in UAE and the region stays healthy.

Maintaining hand hygiene is one of the most important steps people can take to avoid getting sick and spreading germs to others. Many diseases and conditions are spread by inadequate hand washing or total lack of it. Namely, World Health Organisation guidelines of hand washing, which AHC adheres to, state that hand washing should not be less than 40 to 60 seconds, using trusted products, in order to make hands as germ-free as possible.

The Arab Hygiene Council member, Dr. Muhammad Halwani, consultant in Infection Control and Hospital Epidemiology, stated, “The health and well-being of families in the Middle East, especially in UAE, is a priority for us. As such, we are proactively educating families and the general public on proper hand hygiene as per the WHO guidelines. With the recent appearance of MERS-CoV and the fact that there is no proven cure for MERS-CoV, proper hand hygiene has become even more critical. Hands are one of the main pathways of germ transmission through direct contact with infected people and contaminated surfaces.”

“We strongly oppose any misconceptions regarding proper hand hygiene as they negatively affect the educational efforts we have made so far on the issue. Therefore, we urge those in authority in the Middle East region to protect the health of their people by promoting proper hand hygiene practices,” added Dr. Halwani.
